Toronto Police have charged the parents of a 14-month-old boy who died after ingesting opioids.
In May 2020, members of the Sex Crimes – Child & Youth Advocacy Centre (CYAC) began an investigation into the death of the boy, who lived in a Toronto-area apartment with his parents and another couple.

He allegedly ingested drugs that were in the apartment for personal use and died from toxic levels of fentanyl, heroin, and cocaine, according to police.
“After a thorough investigation which included consultation with the Ministry of the Attorney General and Toronto Police Homicide, it was determined the boy’s parents would be arrested and charged,” police said in a release.
In January 2021, they were both charged with criminal negligence causing death and failure to provide the necessities of life.
This is believed to be the first investigation of its kind by the CYAC, which conducts child-focused investigations, since it opened in October 2013.
