Oliphant says there are still ‘love the sinner but hate the sin’ attitudes among Liberals, though many colleagues support him. He adds the government needs to do more at home and abroad on LGBTQ rights and gun access

Openly gay Liberal MP Rob Oliphant says, despite having many allies in his caucus, there are still people there with a “love the sinner but hate the sin” attitude when it comes to LGBTQ rights.

In an interview with The Hill Times, the MP for Don Valley West, Ont., said that although he feels “tremendous support,” he still thinks there is, at least subtly, a separation between those who are tolerant and those who fight for LGBTQ equality.

“There are allies and these are the allies like the [Liberal MP] Hedy Frys of our world who have been with me, and us, and our community from the very, very beginning. and these are the people who don’t need to say anything,” he said, tearing up. ‘They’re just there.”

“And I have some very good friends like that. However, there are also people who have a sort of ‘love the sinner but hate the sin’ attitude from a very conservative position, and it’s harder.”

Homosexuality was only made legal 50 years ago. People live longer than that - and carry their first lessons with them. No on-off switch came with the change of heart. By the time the legislation meets its century mark, people born with the "it's a sin" wash will no longer be around to answer to it. Don't be so damned pushy!

Oliphant is a United Church of Canada 'minister'.. which just goes to show how far into apostacy and confusion the United Church has fallen. Like the Anglican Church of Canada it is unrecognizable as a Christian denomination anymore, it is simply a shill for New Age post structural nonsense like this..

As for Oliphant, he is one sick puppy. The fact is the that the practice of homosexuality will ALWAYS be gravely and intrinsically disordered and is a mortal sin (which puts one's salvation is imminent jeopardy).

That's in the Bible... which seems to have escaped him. In fact like most homosexuals they are in desperate need of social affirmation and legitimization to compensate for the internal desolation, futility, hypocrisy and shame that is irredeemably a part of the homosexual 'lifestyle'.

But not to worry.. i'm sure Justin will give him a big KISS on the lips to make up for it and make him feel welcome as a true token of diversity. YUCK.

Maybe Trudeau he'll put in a good word for Rob in the Last judgement.... i'm sure he has the standing of Saint for his unqualified support of homosexuality, abortion, euthenasia ... morons..

Even though the point of this thread was to troll and Locutus cares nothing about LGBT rights, it does serve as a reminder how much we over simplify politics into left v. right. We shouldn't assume Liberal support LGBT people simply because Liberals are associated with the left. When same-sex marriage was an immediate political issue in Canada, many Liberals did not support it. The Liberal controlled government in the 90s repeatedly voted down marriage equality bills and re-affirmed the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman in law. Some Liberals continued to oppose it even when it finally became legal. Even a member of the NDP was against it until the bitter end.

It is a red herring to bring the Bible into a discussion of homosexuality. There is no need to play, quote chapter and verse at 20 paces.
I believe that God loves my entire family, whether gay or straight.

I'm so proud of you for standing up for the LGBT community Loc.

With this level of support, the Cons might actually make it to 2010 by the end of 2016.

Yea, that pesky few pages in the good bible! Interpretation !! Fighting might be to much of a strong expectation, but tolerance is a start.

God loves everyone. He doesn't like what some do.

Its been known for a long time that there are some members with more socially conservative views in the Liberal party. They didnt all vote in favour of same sex marriage in 2005. Also look at the little internal fight they had last year when Trudeau decided to not allow members to vote their conscience on abortion related issues. It doesnt surprise me at all that there may still be some there with those views who just generally stay quiet.

Lets assume for a moment that you are totally right with this statement, so what?

The Moderator of the United Church of Canada is a openly gay woman. She is married and her wife is also associated with the church. I don't understand why it makes a difference. The only reason I mention it is to show how welcoming the church is. It has an open communion table where all are welcome.

There's no getting around the fact that marriage was a Union between a man and a woman for thousands of years & there's a fair number of people who find it hard to turn 180 degrees on a dime, let alone being told their thinking is wrong! :)
