Finally, a good policy.

Ontario NDP pledges full dental coverage as part of universal health care plan

Ontario's NDP is promising to introduce "Canada's first universal Pharmacare plan" that would cover dental care and prescription drug costs should the party form a government following the June provincial election.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath announced the plan at a campaign-style event in downtown Toronto on Saturday that laid out five key planks of her election platform.

"We are going to make sure every working person in Ontario has dental benefits. And we will make the largest investment in public dental coverage in Ontario's history — so that every senior can get the dental care they need. And every person on social assistance can get the dental care they need," she told a packed room of supporters.

"No one should go years without a trip to the dentist because they're a part-time worker, or retired, or because their job simply doesn't come with benefits ... We can help people be healthier and make life more affordable in our province if we can help more people go to the dentist."

The plan will be called 'Ontario Benefits,' she explained.

The Hamilton Centre MPP went on to explain that the NDP's proposal would also include prescription drug costs. The plan will initially cover 125 of the most commonly prescribed drugs and cost $475 million a year.

"It's a prescription drug plan for everyone, no matter how old you are, no matter where you work, no matter how much money you make," Horwath said.

The Ontario Liberals recently introduced free prescription drugs for anyone under the age of 25. The change, introduced in the 2017 provincial budget, took effect on Jan. 1, 2018.

The NDP's platform also includes a promise to de-privatize Hydro One, improve care for seniors and children, convert provincial student loans into grants that will not have to be repaid and increase corporate tax rates.

More details coming this week

Horwath did not provide comprehensive details about how an NDP government would pay for the promises made Saturday, but said more details about the plan will be made available at a technical brief at Queen's Park on Monday. When asked by reporters after her speech, Horwath wouldn't say whether her plan would run a deeper deficit than the Liberal party's current budget.

A full NDP campaign platform is expected in the next few weeks, she added.

"We are going to run the biggest campaign the NDP has ever run in Ontario," Horwath told the crowd. "It will show everyone why we are running, and why we are running to win."

People gotta get real ..... It is only Poor Folks who are told to worry endlessly about the debt.

The Professional Class and the Ruling Class don't give a sh?t about government debt. They continue to clamour for more tax relief. Are any of the Upper Class suggesting that they would rather see the government pay down the debt rather then to sign on for another tax break or loophole? Are any of the Upper Class talking about refusing a tax break and to have the funds applied to the public debt?

Furthermore .... I would think that at least 50 percent of members within this forum easily recognize that the American Empire is in decline and thus quite obvious that America has no intention of honouring any debt repayment. And, when the American Empire collapses (before 2030) the complete North American continent will collapse which means that Canada too will walk away from it's debt obligations.

My advice to voters ..... get out there and vote, grab as many social programs that you can because if you don't the Professional Class will be at the trough immediately after the election without any care or attention towards any deficit spending.

And what is left will be spent on bombs to show the rest of the world just how strong we are and just how much we love our "Values".

Yea, no one believes Trumptards when they start talking about debt.

They're more liberal than Obama.

Sure just spend money you don't have on people that don't contribute. What could possibly go wrong with such a well thought out hallucination?

Hi! TaxSlave

When I see that the Rich Folks don't have enough money to bribe/lobby for more tax cuts and loopholes, then maybe I might agree that they are being taxed enough. When Rich Folks and corporations have enough money to arrive at a political meeting/dinner with 25 hundred dollars in hand, obviously they have too much money as it is. Especially, while the working class are smelling armpits on the subway to get to a food bank.

I am Gawd Awful tired of listening to Rich Folks spread fear and threats of chaos whenever the working stiffs ask for a better life.

Denying access to food and medicine at war time is rightly considered a crime against humanity. Denying access to food and medicine at peace time is considered a free market economy.

Yes lets take all those rich people down , take all their wealth and spread it around some . What's next ? Whose money will we use when that runs out ?

You let capitalism do it's thing and then shuffle the cards every once and a while.

Everyone knows that.

Hi! PGS

I never said that we should bleed the Rich Folks dry. I think that anybody earning more than 100 thousand gross per year should easily be able to pay a minimum of 2000 bucks per year in taxes.

I think that any corporation which has enough money to attend a 25 hundred dollar political fund raiser lunch, should be forced to pay 5 times that much in additional taxes because obviously they are not paying enough taxes and need no more breaks.

I just think that when people vote in the Ontario election, they should vote for which ever political party is offering more social programs just like the Rich Folks will vote for their own pocketbooks.

Ontario voters need to vote their own pocketbooks and not listen to the propaganda which the Rich Folks are feeding us.

the problem is that the money going to social programs could be going into rich people's pockets.

Bills. Must be paid , all the feel good policies in the world require cold hard cash . All the public servants that have better pension plans and benefits then their employers ( read taxpayers ) must be paid in cold hard cash . Taxing people beyond their abitiliy to pay creates less incentive to work . Why should I work 75 hours a week employing people and creating wealth if I am just going to have the governments tax it all away ?

There are lots of dentists now but as soon as they are made civil servants they’ll be scarce as hens’ teeth just like doctors.
