From the where are we today file:

Christmas is a time for giving and that is what Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne is asking of her citizenry. With almost $300 billion in debt, and almost 1 in 10 dollars of revenue going to pay interest, and already facing the highest tax rates in North America,

The Star reports that Ontario officials are asking that 'patriots' voluntarily donate their tax refund or write a cheque to defray the province's massive debtload.

As The Toronto Sun reports, Canada’s largest province has asked its taxpayers to donate their hard-earned money to the cause of bailing out the much indebted provincial government.

For a mere $21,000 for every man, woman and child in the province, Ontario could be debt free.

No, this is not some kind of holiday joke about the Grinch who stole Christmas.

On top of paying among the highest taxes in North America, and coping with skyrocketing hydro prices — hikes directly caused by the decisions made by this Liberal administration and the previous one — the Wynne government wants more.

Treasury Board Chair Deb Matthews made the bold request last week, and specifically asked folks to donate their tax return rebate to help pay off the provincial debt.

“It’s an unusual thing for someone to do, but I would encourage any Ontarian who wants to make a contribution to feel free to do so,” said Matthews.

A government asking for donations isn’t just unusual. It’s like a stranger taking your car and then coming back the next day to ask if you’ll chip in some money for the gas. Maybe you can pay for an oil change, too?

But the Wynne government is desperate for cash.

I had just missed this when it was news and was wondering how it had worked out considering the spending promises we are hearing about lately
;)

from thew zerohedge article:

One wonders how long before non-volunteer-donors will be labelled enemies of the state?

This isn't new. For the last few years (at least) the provincial portion of your tax return asks if you want to donate part or all of your refund to pay down Ontario's debt.

But the thing is, the debt can't be that serious because flosstard says debt is no big deal. Well, it must be a pretty big deal if the govt needs to comes hat-in-hand trying to mooch your tax return to pay for their corruption and incompetence.

Oh my.

Mr Wynne is panhandling to balance the budget.

Gonna take a lot of squeegeeing a lot of windshields at the intersection by the Legislature to fix this

Good idea in principle except that if people did start to give to pay the debt, the government would immediately react by increasing spending to compensate.

How can you buy votes that way ?

And that's the problem. A fiscally responsible candidate would either promise to reduce spending or increase revenue (through increases to either taxes, fees, or fines or any combination of these).

The politician who promises tax cuts or spending increases with no regard for the debt will always win more votes hands down until we go bankrupt.

bankruptcy might be a blessing in disguise then then the province would be forced to balance the books.

Lest we forget ... It was the Rae NDP that brought in the Casinos, Slots and everything beyond 6/49 and Super 7. They may as well have given out free heroin, then sold it to the addicts for massive profits.

I wonder how many thousands of lives have been ruined by that NDP fiscal "creativity"?

If the government of Ontario really wanted to attract voluntary contributions, it should first start to pay down the debt and continue to pay down the debt even after contributions start to come in. I'm not saying that that would necessarily attract many contributions (since many people give to a more trustworthy NGO already), but it would certainly attract more voluntary contributions than if the government shows no interest in balancing the debt.

Urged To "Voluntarily" Pay More Taxes To Cut Province's Debt

OLG SLOTS!

Don't give the Government ideas or it'll start introduce slot machines to public schools.
