Great Britain cheated out of a silver medal by incompetent judges:

Sochi 2014: GB's Elise Christie misses out on Olympic silver

Christie disqualified in chaotic final

13 February 2014
By Ollie Williams BBC Olympic sports reporter in Sochi

Elise Christie missed out on an Olympic medal after receiving a penalty as the women's 500m short track final descended into chaos at Sochi 2014.

Christie, Italy's Arianna Fontana and South Korea's Park Seung-hi collided early in the race.

The Scot, 23, recovered first to cross the line behind China's Li Jianrou for silver, but was penalised for causing the crash and demoted to eighth.

Christie's preferred event, the 1,000m, takes place next week at the Games.

Reaching the final four of the Olympic 500m had been an unexpected bonus for Christie, who had never reached a senior final over that distance in her career until this point.

But as she tried to overtake her rivals on the inside of the straight, she failed to make her move in time and collided with Fontana and Park while trying to correct her error.

The penalty saw Christie demoted to eighth, below the four 'B' finalists, and elevated Fontana to silver ahead of Park.

oh man what a finish !!!! Never think the Americans are out of the game when you have the lead.... I think I sweated as much as the girls did last 2 minutes of that game ....3 2 Canada ....
This was a good win for the new coach of our women's hockey team who has only been with them for two months. Prior to this win the ladies had dropped four games against the US in other competitions. Nice win for the team and big kudos also to Hayley Wickenheiser who was a powerhouse on the ice for the Canadians. :canada:

I'm glad the Russians won the Pairs in Figure Skating (and the Silver).. imho.. it is the most dramatic and theatrical of all Winter Olympic events.. and i think close to the Russian soul as well with their love of classical ballet. They have been perennial powers in the discipline.. and this was a well deserved win (Tatiana Volosozhar and Maxim Trankov for the Gold and Ksenia Stolbova and Fedor Klimov for the Silver).

Canada does well too, but not quite as consistently (5th and 7th in Sochi).. something in the vast northern vistas and its artistic expression i suppose. :)
I am too, coldstream......their skate was simply outstanding.

Evgeni Plushenko has withdrawn from the Men's Olympic Skating competition - what a shame for the Russians as Evgeni was highly favored to medal. Evgeni underwent spinal surgery a few months ago and had felt well enough to compete. However during pre-competition warm-up he faltered on the ice and did not feel strong enough to continue. This will come as a real blow to the Russian team as his late withdrawal means they cannot name another skater to take his place. I was really looking forward to watching Evgeni as he always delivers a great skate.

Re: Olympic chatwas GM

He was GM

1-0 for Canada against Norway in men's hockey.

Wayne was the head coach of Phoenix, though he was also part owner and held a few front office positions as well. He was never their GM.

Frankly Wayne was a bad coach, but players like him rarely make good coaches.

I watched that Japanese kid Hanyu outpoint Patrick Chan in the short skate, in fact set a world record. He's cold as ice, flawless and appears to be weightless.

He's absolutely no competition to Chan in artistry, whose programs are mesmerizing when he nails them.. but in Figure Skating these days athleticism trumps artistry.. a result of decades of scandal and point rigging in the subjective artistic component.

I think Chan can do it.. but Hanyu does not make mistakes. It'll have to be on Patrick's own merit.. and with his own athletic ability.

yeah he was the coach, a rookie coach, so i wouldn't call him bad, it was his first kick at the
cat, coaching, and it was nice to 'finally'see at least a percentage of the money he put into
the coyotes paid back to him, just a few months ago, when the phoenix team finally sold.

Embarrassment of riches. That phrase keeps running through my mind as I watch the opening period of the Canada vs Norway game. So many superstars out there against a team where each player knows the other like a brother – they have played together that long.

I actually don’t have high expectations for the first couple of games so a win is a bonus to me. However, if our guys hope to win Gold they are going to have to cohere pretty darn quickly. Right now the lack of cohesion is only too evident. The first PP was gonzo, IMHO.

I am happy to finally be watching our team in competition, no matter how they are playing right now because I have little doubt they will prove to be the team that Yzerman and Babcock...........and all of us fans.......hoped they could be.

0 - 0 end of first period.

Hmmmmn......this team looks way different in the 2nd P then they did in the first. Webber and Benn with goals - 2 goals on 13 shots - I'm a happy camper!
