Non paywall Link: Official bilingualism is officially dead in Canada

Statistics Canada surely did not time the release of language data from the 2021 Census to coincide with the launch of an election campaign in Quebec. But its publication of findings that confirm the decline of French within the province and across Canada are sure to light a fuse on the campaign trail as Premier François Legault calls for Ottawa to cede more powers to Quebec.

Can open... worms everywhere....

I'm sure they're right and this is going to be a pretty big issue in their election. And depending how things go it's bound to bleed over into the federal scene for the next election there as well. Fun times.

I hear Mandarin, not French (or rather Acadian) is the second-most common milk tongue in Canada. And, as you say, Hindi and Tagalog are probably close to Acadian in frequency.

This should emphasize the importance of getting your preferences in the basic law of the land, be it a Charter, a Constitution, or what-have-you.

The FNs didn't do it, so they're out. And the more-recent immigrants didn't, so they're out.

Take the lesson, kids!

There is certainly more mandarin that all varieties go French combined on the West coast. Probably more Pakistani as well.

Maybe y'all should take a lesson from that heaven-on-earth, Pakistan, and pick a minority language as your official language. They chose Urdu, even though only about 7% of Pakistanis speak it as their milk tongue, with Punjabi (48%), Sindhi (12%), Saraiki (10%), and Pashto (8%) way ahead.

Spanish, maybe?

There's a certain logic to it - God knows talking to each other hasn't helped a damn bit so picking a language we can't understand as our official communication choice would probably be a smart move.

It'd sure as hell put them arrogant, pushy, Punjabi-speaking Canadians in their place!
