Well, in 2013 there were 611,105 that died of heart disease. Adding in the 128,978 who died of a stroke and the 75,578 who died of diabetes I'm sure a pretty good percentage of the combined deaths could be attributed to supersizing/oversizing their meals.
But let's face it, we're not much better up here.
Using the same 3 causes of death for Canada, in 2011 those three accounted for more than 25% of all deaths in Canada.
Not much better but you rarely see those humungeous restaurant portions, up here. They are even reffered to as "American portions" in our dialect.
Doesn't really sound like a lot as those 3 are probably among the top 5 killers. I'd guess pneumonia and cancer would be up there too.
Cancer was the number one killer in Canada. Oddly, it wasn't in the US. As for the 3 that were mentioned, in both Canada and the US they were ranked in the top 10. In Canada those 3 accounted for over 1/3 of the total deaths when just factoring in the top 10 causes of death in Canada in 2011.
In hard numbers, there were something like 274,000 deaths from all causes in 2011. Over 180,000 of them succumbed to one of the top ten causes of death. Heart disease, stroke and diabetes accounted for over 67,000 of those.
That comes as a complete surprise to me. I've heard year in year out that heart disease is our biggest killer, so of course I'm wondering if the figures you have are accurate.
