New York City is threatening to shut down a public bus line because it forces women to sit in the back of the bus in compliance with Orthodox Jewish gender segregation.
Since 1973, the Private Transportation Corp has run public bus B110 as part of a franchise agreement with New York City' s Department of Transportation. Now, the city is threatening to terminate the agreement and shut down the line because it has been discovered that the bus requires all females to sit in the back of the bus in accordance with Orthodox Jewish laws of gender separation. Two non- Orthodox females, who rode the bus on separate occasions, were told by passengers to move to the back because the front seats were reserved for men. Even though the bus was half-empty, one driver refused to move the bus until the woman changed seats.
The bus runs through heavily populated Orthodox Jewish neighborhoods in Brooklyn and works to prevent men and women from intermingling by making women sit behind men. There are signs that require women to pay the driver in the front of the bus but enter through the back.
