Doesn't change the fact that the fines and direct cleanup costs (let alone down time and civil suits) far outweigh the over simplified comment that it is about money.

... All this in response to the question: "Why would we want to destroy the environment?"

You forgot the loss of $Millions in eco-deposits.

I hate to disagree with you grump but you're just repeating what the eco's want everyone to believe and that is the "majority of people in BC are against it". Quite frankly, I doubt that it's true. One area/city voting against something doesn't make the majority of the whole province. And, as has also been stated here, we're "pretty good" at what we do. How ANYONE can say that the environment isn't a consideration is blind, deaf and - well, dumb. Why would we want to destroy our environment? It a ridiculous idea at best and fear mongering at worst.

Ah, some sensible thought!

Time for some rational thought on the subject. Can anyone think of a worse disaster than Lac Megantic? Yet that hasn't stopped anything, just spurred people into correcting mistakes and taking more precautions! We have to get rid of this lame mentality that we can't do things. 45 years ago we put men on the moon, which is a little more formidable than moving oil.

45 years ago most Canadians still had a work ethic and we would not have to spend decades in talks just to create economic activity. We just went and did it and most everyone was thankful to be working and making good money instead of looking for handouts.

Lac Magantic is a direct result of NIMBYs and NOPEs controlling the process. Without them there would have been a pipeline instead of a rail disaster.
