North Korea releases imprisoned Canadian pastor, state media says

North Korea has released a Canadian pastor serving a life sentence there on humanitarian grounds, the country's official KCNA news agency said on Wednesday.

"Rim Hyon Su, a Canadian civilian, was released on sick bail according to the decision of the Central Court of the DPRK on August 9, 2017, from the humanitarian viewpoint," it said, using the country's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

Also known as Hyeon Soo Lim, who served at one of the largest churches in Canada, he was sentenced to hard labour for life in December 2015 for what North Korea says was an attempt to overthrow the regime.

But in all seriousness, it might actually have something to do with current pissing contest between Trump and Kim. North Korea makes a stink, things get tense and then they release a Western prisoner. A lot of things are going on behind the scenes, and while there's no evidence that this is connected, it does fit the pattern.

Sure. Trudeau allowed Kim to release a prisoner while saving face by presenting it on humanitarian grounds.

Basic human psychology.

If Kim should release a US prisoner, he would appear to have capitulated to US demands.

Again, basic human psychology.

A further factor is what was mentioned above, that releasing a Canadian prisoner could be a way for Pyongyang to send the US the message that playing nice gets more done than not.

From my understanding he is in poor health and like the American earlier, the NK regime would rather he die elsewhere than on NK soil.

How Canada secured the release of ailing pastor imprisoned in North Korea

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's decision to dispatch an envoy was key to securing the release of a Canadian pastor imprisoned in North Korea, says a Canadian with knowledge of the case.

As was first reported in state-run media in North Korea, Daniel Jean, the national security and intelligence adviser to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, led a delegation to the capital city of Pyongyang to discuss the case of Toronto Presbyterian minister Rev. Hyeon Soo Lim.
