How could it possibly not matter? If the contamination of drinking water is not caused by fracking, then banning fracking to stop contamination of the drinking water is beyond stupid, it's literally insane.
Pretty much. Why would you blame the cat for the dog barking?

That's exactly what I'm asking. I'm asking for a declaration of responsibility from those poised to reap billions from the harvest of shale gas to do their absolute best to minimize risk to the surrounding environment, and regulatory controls to ensure that happens. I do wonder why you are so dead set against such precautions but that doesn't change my position.

A declaration of responsibility?

Go through the rules/regs at the various jurisdictional agencies and you'll see the legislated responsibilities... And those 'poised' to reap the profits include you in the form of royalties and taxes. Make no mistake, the gvt takes NO risk, expends NO capital and DOES collect in excess of 50% of the proceeds when you add up the royalties and combined taxes.

I am not dead set against precautions as they are already there - they are legislated in place... I see your commentary as an individual that is not comfortable with the existing structure and is demanding more be done - that in itself is a great ambition to have, however, you are speculating on a theoretical problem and demanding that industry do something about an imaginary issue.

Like I have said, there are decades of data and successful practice in this area - there are no secrets and there is reams of data available for you to analyze.... That said, do the analysis; engage testing and publish your results BUT that is your responsibility.

I don't think it's unreasonalbe to expect some effort from the government in those areas. My concern is that it really appears that the system is breaking down in the US, the industry suggests their methods are safe and that there are minimal risks to the environment but evidence from the envirnmental sector suggests that either these claims are false or that safe practices are not being adhered to. I'm hoping we can do better in Canada but am hesitant as complaints are already surfacing in areas where shale gas extraction is already underway.

What do people who have natural ground sourced methane in their water do?

What is Haliburton Canada doing that is different than Haliburton from WY?

And that is or isn't caused by fracturing?

Methane: Good Gas, Bad Gas - Pictures, More From National Geographic Magazine

Kind of sort of...Improper disposal of waste fluids , surplus water, and leakage through well casings into aquifers has occurred.
that said yeah, it is way better than the alternative..

FRacking has caused mass hysteria in New Brunswick, Petros, with emissions from burnt fracturing company trucks noted..

You are assuming they are inadequate... Now, prove it

And Step 1 is to define the problem.

Is contamination of drinking water the problem? If so, then we need to study what is contaminating the drinking water, and then find ways of making those things NOT contaminate the drinking water. It may require the complete banning of some things, but is more likely to require changes in practices and procedures for a number of useful things, in order to allow them to continue while also ameliorating their harmful effects.

But spare us the "ban hammer." Seriously, I understand that setting yourself emotionally against this or that is easier and more satisfying, but true solutions require effort, study, and thought.

It's how adults deal with their problems.
