Last Updated Friday, Jul. 27, 2012 12:31PM PDT Former RCMP Cpl. Monty Robinson received a 12-month conditional sentence in court Friday after being convicted of obstruction of justice in March.
Robinson’s sentence includes one month of house arrest, a curfew between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. and the completion of an alcohol treatment program.
The judge also ruled Robinson is not allowed to consume alcohol, must write a letter of apology to Hutchinson’s family and pay a $1,000 fine to the victim’s surcharge fund.
Robinson was found guilty of thwarting the Delta police officers who tried to determine whether he was drunk when he struck and killed 21-year-old motorcyclist Orion Hutchinson with his Jeep after attending a Halloween party.
The court heard Robinson had five beers before getting behind the wheel that night. The judge ruled Robinson had deliberately tried to muddy any investigation into whether he was impaired by leaving his driver’s licence at the crash scene, taking his kids home and downing two glasses of vodka before returning.
The judge concluded he was using his police training to avoid accusations of impaired driving.
Orion’s mother Judith Hutchinson likened the sentence to being grounded. “It’s so frustrating,” she told CTV News.
Robinson, who was the senior officer involved in the tasering death of Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski at the Vancouver International Airport, quit the force last week.
Robinson and three other Mounties also face perjury charges stemming from their testimony at the public inquiry into Dziekanski's death.

Drive drunk with two children in the vehicle, kill a man on a motorcycle then leave the scene of the accident without offering assistance so he could uses his professional knowledge to con and manipulate the criminal act he just committed.

Meanwhile the average citizen has a beer after work . As his car impounded,, loses his license and has massive fines implemented upon him at the roadside with no recourse in a court of law..... the system is badly broken

... the entire proceedings were a fiasco. an obstructing justice charge for a dangerous driving causing death beef? and the cap is the sham judgment ...

... and the government is lying about the guilty verdict as well. a mere 12 month conditional sentence for ANY serious crime amounts to an acquittal ...

... there is one good thing about this judgment though -- it proves that the government of canada is employing soldiers like this disgraced pig to harass and murder innocent people ...

Well, now that you're on board with this I'll have to take harder look at my original conclusion.

The entire legal system in B.C. is disgusting. A cop should be getting twice the sentence of anyone else because he is paid to uphold the law and set an example. But karma being what it is, he could find himself leading a very lonely life from now on, while possibly scrubbing sh*thouses for $10 an hour.

No a Police Officer is entitled to the same protections and when convicted sentences as any other citizen or person before the courts.

That said this POS should be jailed. Welcome to Canada and how killing someone while driving drunk means little.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this. A cop is trained to know all the laws and is supposed to be setting an example. Any cop who deliberately breaks the law himself while arresting others is nothing but a bloody hypocrite!

Even a broken paranoid clock is right twice a day.

But for a fairly short duration!

Define crime. When MPs get jail time for padding expense accounts I might believe that.

I had a trust account for paying field crew travel expenses- most of them were pretty good, but there were three or four that would blow your mind on their claims, some people will try anything without being embarrassed. Some even took them to the Union when I denied them & the Union was even stupid enough to back them.

But he's not Native. Whitie doesn't go to jail.

yep, Robinson has Native blood.

The problem is Robinson is toxic to anyone he comes in contact with.
If this was a single case and a mishap that would be one thing but its
just not so.
This cop is not just a boozer, and deserving of special treatment due
to the fact he is native. I know many natives who would never dream
of being like this guy. He is a mean streak looking for action and a run
by the cowardly lion. Look at his handi work on tape during the airport
incident.
As for how things turned out he got off because he had a drinking problem.
He got special treatment because he is native and he manipulated the
whole thing.

If you or I went to a bar and got drunk and got caught behind the wheel
we would be subject to all kinds of suspensions and fines and impound fees.
Robinson sits at home for n early four years and get paid, then quits just
before trial. he killed the guy at the airport and the guy on the bike by a
miserable excuse for a human being. And no he should not score points
because he is native. Native has nothing to do with it, a despicable act
has everything to do with it We have to get past the idea that special
groups get special treatment. Gays, women, natives, short people and
even left handed people. If you commit a crime you should be treated
like a criminal period.
And no I am not anti native, I have an adopted daughter and three grand
kids who are native, and they are as appalled as I am over this.

Being Native has nothing to do with it, but being Native is what got him a light sentence as the judge took this into consideration. So Natives seem to many to be not so bright, they have additional problems which give them a pass others would not get, others being whites. Get special laws and you get special treatment, and it might not be good.

You covered every aspect well, Grumpy and Chief Stewart Phillip feels much the same as you. The sentence was absolutely ridiculous and the judge was absolutely ridiculous, actually bordering on being as criminal as the accused. I sure hope it's appealed which I'm sure it will have to be. (If the Atty. General stands any chance of being re elected)
