Whilst they may be sh*t hot at rugby, the New Zealanders may well be wrong in saying that all animals are sentient (i.e. the ability to experience pleasure and pain and have a parental bond with their young). Maybe our fellow mammals, such as dogs, rabbits and whales, should probably be regarded as sentient but should you describe a slug, an ant or an amoeba as being sentient?

I'll be putting some New Zealand Spring Lamb on the grill, and contemplating the sentience of its short, interrupted life.. before i turn my gaze to my navel.

We should ask Blackleaf what they do with their 60 million sheep over in Manchester.

We don't have 60 million sheep in the UK. At the start of 2014, we had 22.6 million sheep, a decrease of 1.6% from the year before.

There are about 30 million sheep in New Zealand, a country virtually the same size as the UK in area. The number of sheep there was at its peak in 1982, with 70 million. The country has the highest density of sheep per unit area in the world.

The Top 5 countries with the most sheep. Number in brackets indicates percentage of world total:

1) China: 187 million (15.9%)
2) India: 75 million (6.4%)
3) Australia: 74,721,551 (6.3%)
4) Sudan: 52,500,000 (4.4%)
5) Iran: 48,750,000 (4.1%)
