Look - the point is that we don't want to force the middle class into poverty. If they get to the point where they can't afford their own computer (or an iphone), then they wouldn't have been able to afford rent in the first place. In which case, the additional revenue from a relatively small purchase does not help at all in paying off the debt.

No one seriously believes that having an iphone is living in luxury, and if you do, you're out of touch.

Disagree; luxuries are defined by the eye of the beholder as in; priorities being set by your ability to pay for them.

You can't put a roof over your head but you can maintain a cel-phone or i-phone payment, maybe even the leased Civic, ooopsy; your priorites are fugged up big time!

That old saying "a pot to piss in or a window to throw it our of" has not to this day lost it's relevance to this very topic. You'll notice it mentions nothing of wearing a top hat or even having a pair of shoes which might indeed have been considered luxuries by those who could not afford the proverbial pot.

Todays folk have the i-phones and the lease cars but are choosing to live in mommie and daddies basement rather than re-assign priorities to those things essential to getting your leg up.

It's the other way around.

Many are relegated to those spots because there are not enough opportunities to get out of the basement.

Do you NEED a phone more than shelter? Yes or no?

Like caps comments, this just proves you haven't completely thought out your argument. People are having to go back to their parents because they can't afford rent, but they can afford something to help pass the time instead of living a fruitless life.

And while I agree that one shouldn't spend wastefully - judging someone's expense management entirely based on owning an iphone is also a fallacy.

Relegated to the basement because they won't accept all forms of legitimate gainful employment? There is lots of opportunity. Ask somebody from Manila if there is opportunity in Canada or not. Is that why somebody from Manila will make the 10,000km trek accross the Pacific to work at Tim's in Wawa because there is no opportunity?

The jobs picture for young workers (which Statistics Canada defines as those between the 15 and 24) got slightly worse, as their unemployment rate is now 14.3 per cent. Youth employment is roughly at the same level as in July 2009, when the labour market downturn hit a low.

"I can't afford to move to Canada to work at Tim's because I have to pay my phone bill first".

I know you and cap expect the average person to live like Ayn freaking Rand, but it's just not a realistic expectation.

It's not realistic to put on your big girl panties and do whatever it takes to survive?

If you're promoting the idea that it's okay for the middle class to struggle with survival - you've already lost this argument.
