I would expect that if you took the trouble to go to Newfoundland, you'd find it. Or even, if you're lazy, the Newfoundland grocery store in downtown Toronto.

I don't believe it's the government's job to ensure everyone has easy access to their favorite snack food, however.

It'd bring a much greater market in the industry here at home, rather then trying to sell to other countries, and it'd also be one more excuse to keep it going.... on top of all of that, if grocery stores began to sell the products here, perhaps the sealers could start up their own "Industry" and become more independent due to more profits, thus the Canadian government wouldn't have to dish out any money to keep it a float and beyond all of that, it'd be one less thing these protesters could use against the hunt (claiming it's a waste of tax payer's money)

The more things change eh Prax. I distinctly recall having this same debate last year. And the year before that.

Indeed, not much has changed towards whether the hunt is right or wrong, but what I've noticed over the years is that the protesters arguments seem to be getting more and more desperate, while there continually seems to be not only more support for the hunt, but the hunt is improving.

Durka, what would you define as a true identifying characteristic of a Canadian? A crackhead on the corner of Yonge and Church perhaps? I know that image does it for me. And yes the sealing industry is part of our identity no matter what PETA, IFAW and the rest of the special interest groups say.

Yonge & Church don't intersect, you twit. :p

No, sealing is not part of our national identity. The average Canadian has no tangible past to sealing nor does anyone particularly care about it outside of NFL, it's a regional identity. I don't 2 give ****s what PETA or any other group thinks on the matter.

Growing up, I was introduced to a lot of different kinds of food and things to "eat" many things I imagine would gross out the average person.

Heck I even had my very first true "Vegan" meal over the weekend with my mother.... half of it wasn't bad, the other half was kinda putrid..... but I tried it. However I did end up farting up a horrible storm (even by my normal standards) and was on the crapper for a while afterwards.... but I tried it.

Kidneys, hearts, livers from all sorts of animals, chocolate covered crickets, sushi when I was around 12.... just about every moving animal in Canada.... if it was once alive or still is, and it's not known to kill people when you eat it, I'll try eating it.... Seal included.

And afterall, Les from Survivorman ate a seal eyeball and said it was like ice cream and sucked the goop right out of it on camera... so now I gotta give that a go sometime.

If the Scots can convince people to eat haggis or the vegans can convince people to eat tofu anything is possible.

Funny, last I checked, I don't live in Newfoundland.... oh wait, I forgot that Quebec, the North & the Maritimes don't really count as a part of Canada, silly me.

All that matters is what happens in precious little Ontario and the Prairies and whatever they all do, is what everybody else accepts. And the fact that Ontario, the Prairies and BC all existed as they currently do long before any Europeans arrived and migrated from this area, or that the natives who existed here for centuries prior never really existed here in the first place and they really came to North America 30 years after the Europeans who magically appeared in Central Canada, from Turkey of all places.

How embarrassing that I slipped up and thought anybody else in the country ever really mattered.

I've eaten everything from Moose to maggots.

I'm the same way, I'll eat anything...once....

If anyone ever takes my advice on the net, this is the time to do it. I've had seal. It's nasty, I give you my honest word on it. But if you must, have at her...you can have my share too!!!

And afterall, Les from Survivorman ate a seal eyeball and said it was like ice cream and sucked the goop right out of it on camera... so now I gotta give that a go sometime.

Be my guest. :angry3:

I'd concede if I didn't like haggis...

And own a kilt...

It's part of your identity and makeup how?

I'm not advocating that they shouldn't be allowed to do what they do, so your second & third paragraph there are both steaming piles of BS.

Go back to feeling inferior now.

Oh the horrors. I got something wrong about Toronto. Not very Canadian of me is it? My crackhead comparison still stands though.

Reaallly....not part of our identity huh? The industry is not just in NL. PEI, NB, NS, NWT, NU, YK, QC all have an interest in sealing to varying degrees.

OK...one person here has eaten Seal Meat & didn't like it.

Has anyone else here actually eaten Seal Meat? I haven't, but I'm curious....what
would it be comparable to in terms of taste? If the argument (or part of it) is to have
the meat available to Canadian's Canada wide, what's it taste like?

For example, when I had (about 20yrs ago) Bottlenose Dolphin steaks, they had
the look and consistency of pork, but you knew that they had come from the ocean
due to the taste and aroma. Not bad...but not something I'd like on a regular basis.
You know, kind'a fishy like a Salmon taste, but looked & chewed like pork.

So, anyway, what does Seal Meat taste like?

I'm curious as well, but even here where I live, I can't find anywhere that sells it.

For market purposes and popularity, I have no idea how big it'd be, but since the hunt is seasonal, I imagine it'd only be available certain times of the year as well.... sort of like other seafoods are only available certain times of year. My guess would be that it'd be sustainable market-wise (on top of the already existing market out there for the products)

Although our Gov. General and many other politicians tried seal meat and said it was "Good" ~ Whether they were just playing to the cameras or how good it really was, I dunno.

But it doesn't seem very "Available" for people to actually try.

If you're going to try and be witty, you could at least be accurate. Seeing as you're from Edmonton, you can't really comment on a city's drug problem.

How is it part of our national identity?

Chicken.

Just kidding. You've had Bear right? If you have, you may remember a greasiness you get on the roof of your mouth, or that livery flavour, if it wasn't cooked or hung properly. Well, add to that, that typical sea taste. And voila!!! There you have it.

Would you be surprised if I told I don't like eating Bear either?
