I think he means as a symbol. He is using Cowboy as a way of denoting the American West. Much as Mountie is an immediately recognized symbol of Canada. He still has not responded to that. He seems to duck & cover when anyone ( and several have) bring this up.

Jo - you're thinking of Paul Bunyan. But when that sort of folklore was brought up and Canadian examples of the same sort of thing were placed beside it, Percy said that's not what he meant.

Zen - thing is, if he really thinks the cowboy is the only symbol the U.S. has or that the U.S. is the only place that's had something like that, then he's got his head where the sun doesn't shine. Besides, then he nixed that by saying that the Mounties don't count.

I still think he just spoke before thinking and now he doesn't have the guts to admit he was being hasty.... not realizing that all his backing and filling is just making the situation worse....

this is getting good (funny) ;-)

hmm. wondering if percy would be an "allegorical" myth.......US style..

(kinda hard to keep up with the "changes " as he flip flops around.... But it might be a new game the chap is starting here.

myths about Canada.....(and Canadians One assumes)..

Canadians travel via canoes.

Canadians live in Igloos. or tents........depends on the level of snow.

Canadians chew blubber

( just ask any well rounded , "educated " american   This is exactly the impression that many americans have on another board that I left some time ago......( due to this kind of ignorance. )

An allegorical legend transcends an individual and represents something else. A cowboy is a representation of the Old West in America. Now. With that understood, don't give me people as examples.

I could list a hundred American legends off the top of my head(people)/that wasn't the point at all.

Uncle

I don't see where he dismissed the Mounties. I think he just ignored them. If a cowboy is meant to represent the Old West...I think the Mountie equally represesnts determination. Persevering through the cold and trials of the North.Hence ....they always get there man, even in the wilds of Canada.

"they always get there man, even in the wilds of Canada."

that too is a "myth".......and NO disrespect to the fine Mounties . Just the reality of things.

but it is an excellent catch phrase and fosters the Image...effectively.

Exactly...that is why I see it as a symbol of determination...which fits what Percy is trying to convey.

Well hell, if we're just looking for myths...

Myth: George W. "All Hat, No Cattle" Bush is a real cowboy

Myth: The United States is the best nation on earth in all possible ways

Myth: The U.S. is the saviour of the world

Myth: The U.S. is God's chosen nation (always makes me wonder, "which god?")

I could go on....

I'm not the one who's embarrassed, ITN.

With the idiotic statements you just made, you well should be.

The only idiots are the ones who believe those myths I mentioned are actually true. Sadly, I know plenty of people right here in Ohio who do believe them.

Everything I mentioned, with the exception of the one about GWB, is the sort of thing I grew up hearing as a child from various adults. And they rank right up there with Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, and all the other various mythical material that people tell their kids.

that is coming very close to poster bashing......and making it "personal" is destructive. :x

so back to the myths that hold no solid foundation.

So you know a few idiots that say that in Ohio, how does it constitute an American myth? For someone claiming to abhore broad statements, you certainly don't seem to follow it.
