ST. CATHARINES, Ont. — Mickey the lobster could be winging his way back to the Maritimes after being abandoned in a business parking lot in St. Catharines.
A release from the Lincoln County Humane Society said the origin of the lobster is unknown, but the society is "looking into why the lobster was found in a parking lot, in a box."
The Humane Society suspects the lobster could have been used as an April Fool's Day prank.
The lobster is being held in an aquarium with salt water that was donated by a local grocery store.
"We're trying to figure out the next steps, which will likely be getting him onto a plane to go back to the ocean, which will be at no cost to us," Kevin Stroobrand, executive director of the Lincoln County Humane Society, said.
The Humane Society is looking for a donor to fly the lobster to the East Coast.
"A person who has been involved in finding him has offered to drive him to Toronto at his expense," Strooband said.
However, Mickey's unknown origins mean some research will have to be done before they can set the lobster back into the ocean, as it may need some form of rehabilitation.
"We're not just going to be taking him and dumping him in the ocean, especially since the water here is not as cold as it is in the Maritimes," Strooband said.
The Humane Society will not be launching a full investigation into the abandonment, as legislation doesn't outline the crustacean as an animal.
However, Stroobrand said "if we found anybody who did something that was inappropriate, then we are going to use that as an educational opportunity for the public."
"It's important to mention that this is in line with our fundamentals in that we care for all animals," Strooband said. "Even for the fact that it is not defined as an animal, it is a sentient being that is capable of feeling distress."

Any hopes that a lobster abandoned in a St. Catharines, Ont., parking lot might be returned to the ocean were snuffed out Thursday morning.
"Sad news, Mickey the Lobster has died, he died in peace and quiet over night, but had 3 offers to fly out east. Thanks for the well wishes," the Lincoln County Humane Society (LCHS) tweeted.
Mickey was found a day earlier inside a box in a parking lot, possibly left there as part of an April Fool's Day prank.
The crustacean was being held in a donated aquarium while authorities looked for a way to fly it back to the Maritimes at no cost.
The LCHS said it won't launch a full investigation into the abandonment, but chose to use the case as an "educational opportunity for the public," executive director Kevin Strooband said.
"It's important to mention that this is in line with our fundamentals in that we care for all animals," Strooband said. "Even for the fact that it is not defined as an animal, it is a sentient being that is capable of feeling distress."

Justice for Mickey! We need to find the malicious pranksters who left this poor defenseless (well, except for those nasty-@ ss claws) creature to fend for himself. They should have at least left him in a nice warm tub...*drool* of ...*slurp* butter!
