Hi there!

My boyfriend and I are moving to Jasper from Ontario to work at the Jasper Park Lodge. I just wanted to get some opinions as I have never been west of Ontario. I've had mixed reviews thus far. Some people say I should go for the more commercialized Banff or Lake Louise and others say the sleepy little town of Jasper is just heavenly. Locals and visitors alike - any thoughts?

thanks,

Laura

we have been to both...personally I would perfer to live in Jasper over Banff.. Banff is very touristy... I found Jasper has a more small town home feeling.... but both are beautiful areas :)

I love Jasper. I've been a number of times. While Banff will overwhelm you, Jasper will absolutely humble you in the face of majestic nature like you have not seen. I hope you golf as it has a beautiful course there at the lodge. I've played it a few times when I was a youngster and each hole is set up for a picturesque view.

As mentioned it's much more like a small town and I would definately go for living there over Banff. It's not a long drive to get down to Banff and Edmonton is really not at all far away should you feel the need to get urban again for a while.

Best of luck and enjoy the mountians.

Welcome to the forum Sassy. You may not get a response for the original poster in this thread as they haven't posted since 2008. However there are several members here that are from the Edmonton area here that might have some suggestions for you. Good luck!

We travelled across canada, (east to west) last fall, and
spent two days in Jasper, very sweet and clean town, of
course lots of gift shops etc., and they definitely cater
to the tourist, but the natural beauty there is great, and
the atmosphere around the town is fresh and clean.

My choice would be to stay away from the banff area, so so
crowded in the tourist season, and I imagine Jasper is quite
crowded too, but not so much.

Nice place, if you don't want lots of night life.

Banff has pretty much been bought up up Japanese Companies and individuals. Lake Louise is even more of a Backwater than either Banff or Jasper.

If the Big City is the place you like you will not be happy anywhere in the West. Even Vancouver is way more laid back than anything in Ontario. We Westerners like it that way.

I am not sure what your career plans are. But all real estate in the parks is owned by the government. Housing is available, but the land must be leased, as a result many workers commute from Hinton which is an hour drive outside Jasper.
