A mother in Polk County is worried her son could be taken away because he is severely overweight. Joyce Painter's seven year old son, Justin, weighs 254 pounds. She says the Department of Social Services is threatening to remove him from her home if he doesn't lose weight.
Painter says she first noticed her son's weight gain when he was three, "He played T-ball and soccer, did things just like every other kid, but he was gaining weight." Painter says she's taken Justin to doctor after doctor over the past four years, but nobody has been able to pinpoint the cause of his rapid growth. She's been told it could be genetic, it could be hormonal or it could be his diet. Painter says she's regulated Justin's meals for a while now, "I've got him on three meals a day. A meat and two vegetables, that's it. There's no snacking, I removed all the chips and cookies. I quit buying it." Despite those efforts, Painter says her son continues to gain weight.
Painter says a few weeks ago, she was visited by a case worker from the Polk County Department of Social Services. Painter was shocked at what the representative told her, "They said they had a report that I was feeding my child all the time and that's why he was gaining weight." Painter says that is not the case. DSS would not comment on the situation, citing confidentiality laws. But Painter says DSS told her she had two months to get Justin's weight down, or they would remove him from her home, "I know I'm doing the right thing. It's frustrating because nobody believes me. I do the best I can. If I'm doing something wrong then show me. Come into my home and go through my cabinets, if there's something there that shouldn't be show me, I'll throw it out."
Painter has recently enrolled Justin in a weight management program with a doctor in Columbus. Justin will also start a program next week at Duke University in an effort to bring his weight down. Painter says Justin was also recently tested by a new doctor to see if the cause for his weight gain can be determined.

Justin Painter is just seven years old, but weighs 254 pounds.

How do you think he is at using a toy light saber? That video needs a part two and this kid would be perfect

How totally disgusting. Frankly, there are too many fat people around these days. no excuse for it other than they just eat too much and do too little.

That's a view that comes from a lack of education. While most weight issues are certainly simple like you say, there are medical conditions that cause this sort of thing as well. I can't tell you how hurtful comments like this were to my cousin when her young daughter gained weight thanks to her cancer drugs.

Oh that is BS. the number one problem in this country today, health wise, is fat people. You know that is true. Look at that kids picture and tell me it does not disgust you! I find fat people gross, at all times, and sure there are exceptions, but the majority of them are fat because they don't eat properly and they do nothing but sit on their butts all day.PC be darned, that is the truth.

BS? Read about prednisone and it's effects on the body. The slang in the medical world for it is moon face-buffalo hump cause that's what it does to people. My cousin's daughter was never overweight before being on it (she was underweight thanks to chemo) and returned to a normal weight after stopping it. I'll never forget how hurtful people's ignorant comments were though. Unless I know this kid doesn't have a medical condition, I'm not going to assume otherwise and sit here calling him disgusting.

Exceptions don't make the rules. You are being fed PC propaganda. Fat people are fat because they do not eat properly and do not exercise.Period.

SOME fat people are fat because of that. Probably most of them. That doesn't make it ok for you to call a child disgusting when he very well might be one of those exceptions. You are ass=uming things you can't possibly know.

Frankly, I don't think it's ever ok for an adult to call a child disgusting. He's a child. Even if his weight is completely behavioral, he is a child. His parents would be more to blame for that IMO.

Or because they've been exposed to adenovirus36. Or they have a hormonal imbalance. Or any other hosts of health issues which cause obesity. Prader-Willi patients are a prime example of how haywire things can go in our bodies.

PC be damned, fine... but basic human compassion should not be news to you. Not painting all the overweight people of the world with one brush makes a lot more sense than damning them all as lazy and disgusting.

Looks like the obese are all getting a pass here. They present enormous challenges to the future of our health care system. For that alone, we have every right to ask what the hell is going on. We do have an obesity epidemic and the parents and children involved must take ownership and start to do something positive about it.

I'm curious where this 'pass' was discussed.

There is no doubt that a portion of the overweight are overweight for a variety of involuntary reasons. Eating habits and inactivity I would hazard a guess is the leading factor. Cutbacks to PE in schools, high caloric foods, more time spent in front of a viewing screen. That and more.

However there are better methods than insulting them and enforcing negative stereotypes. The history of criticizing the obese is not old. Heres a claim from the Journal of the American Dietary Association made during a historical analysis of obesity:

"The medical prognosis for persons who are overweight might improve if nonjudgmental dietitians helped clients adopt a sensible eating pattern, pursue a regular program of exercise, and then accept whatever weight follows."

I find intolerant people to be far more disgusting than any person regardless of how they conform to my ideas of beauty. Seriously, given the choice to spend my day with an overweight person with a normal attitude or a jerk, I would take the overweight person. Who am I to judge, "There but for the grace of God, go I."
