Well your're still young enough to think doing 9 keystokes for one entry is a good idea. There's hope for you when you actually age. ;-)
You don't want to know how I was entering those symbols on papers and labs. Oh god....I can type those keys long before the mouse would be clicked onto the first relevant box...:angry3:
9 keystrokes is better than start-->programs-->accesories-->system tools--->character map, scroll scroll scroll copy, paste
one of my pet hates is the people who publish a paper in a journal and use a superscript o, O or 0 instead of a degree symbol °. or even worse, they use um instead of µm.
Or, format, superscript, type "o", back to format, and reverse the changes. Though after that I usually would just copy it to clipboard, lol. Your way is much better Hermann!

shortcut for superscript and subscript in M$word is also useful:
cntrl and shift and + for superscript

when it comes to hijacking, generally no-one minds if you hijack a rusty old tractor. Except maybe the farmer.

Agreed, but you can avoid the first five of those if you put a shortcut to Character Map on the desktop and your monitor's wide enough that you can see it somewhere around the edge of your browser or word processor window. Then it's just three mouse clicks to get the °. And who wants to memorize all those 9 keystrokes for more than one or two special characters? My ancient brain's not up to it anymore.
