The mohawk nation has tried for centuries to be accepted by the whites but the whites never will because of their prejudices so the mohawks have no choice but to act in their own preservation.

Oka is still fresh in their minds

That does not make sense. If they said that all mix couples shall leave the reservation that would make sense. It would be bigotted but it would make sense. Male pride is what this is.

I think all the First Nation Women should threaten to leave the reservation and see how long the chauvanist thinking goes.

So basically if you are a First Nation male you can marry a non First Nation Female and be OK. However if you are a First Nation female and marry a non First Nation male you are off the reservation and out of the tribe.

That's male chauvanism PERIOD.

Of course it is, but it is their rules.

If you are saying that it is their government (Mohawk) that rules, I agree with you.

This is pretty much how tribal authority is decided in the U.S.. The ways that individual tribes exercise their sovereignty vary widely, but, in general, tribal authority is used in the following areas: to form tribal governments, determine tribal membership, regulate individual property, levy and collect taxes, maintain law and order, exclude nonmembers from tribal territory, regulate domestic relations, and regulate commerce and trade. They are a sovereign nation within the U.S..

Now this I find very generous "Five dollars annually for every man woman and child"

They are sovereign to a point.

Back in 2003, Rhode Island State Troopers entered the Narragansett Indian Reservation and raided a NEW smoke shop because they were selling tax free cigarettes to anyone who wanted to buy them.

The State of Rhode Island pretty much said...

"I don't think so."

... and arrested the tribal leader and other tribe members, seized all the cigarettes and money.

In Canada, treaty status is decided b the Canadian government, not the tribe.

They talked about it here too. Lawyers circled like vultures to get rich off that

The laws officially are pretty much the same all over. Florida initially banned blackjack from the Indian casinos, then the Seminoles appealed to the Fed. courts to step in and said they would not get involved. Pretty much left it up to the state. Florida still bans blackjack, but so far has done nothing. Seem's like they are still selling cigarettes also. But I heard they themselves may do something about that little habit. Guess it depends on how much the state wants to stop something. The state of Florida would never toutch the tribal leader unless he committed murder or worse.

Guess this is still going on in some updated form. "The Mohawk Indian reservation along the St. Lawrence River here has long been called Smugglers' Alley, an easy path to sneaking contraband into or out of the United States.
The Mohawk Indian reservation along the St. Lawrence River here has long been called Smugglers' Alley, an easy path to sneaking contraband into or out of the United States. In the 19th century, that meant the occasional cow going whichever way prices were higher. During Prohibition, the contraband was an endless stream of liquor to the United States, and in recent years, it has been huge quantities of untaxed cigarettes heading north."

Right Ironsides. I guess it depends on the state but I think when the states are pushed a little, they push back. The state had no problem with Native Americans selling tax free smokes to other Native Americans living on the reservation. It is when they started opening up their shop to the public is when the state stepped in and sent in the Troopers.

The same with Connecticut casinos, the state allowed them to build but wanted a cut... a lifetime cut of the profits or it would get difficult to operate.

On the surface, this appears similar to the disgraceful things going on among the Seminoles in Florida. Despite the fact that many of the victims have solid contracts which guarantee their property rights in lands ceded to their ancestors, some police thugs are being used by the tribal leaders to exile innocent victims. No matter how hard they try, the courts refuse to intervene to protect their rights.

But if I'm reading this correctly, those who have been dispossessed do not have any such ancestral or property rights claims. However, they appear to have recourse to your federal courts. On that basis, isn't there a way for the grievants to file some form of temporary restraint order?

Who is going to enforce it? These guys are better armed than the cops. As long as they stay away from terrorist crap, Armed Forces shouldn't have reason to step in. Head games is getting close to terrorist....

This is an interesting article in connection with this post.
Mohawk condemns evictions as 'racist'

Apparently not all band members agree with this policy.
Not everybody is a racist. There are hardly any pure bloods left in Canada, so I can only assume that whatever is going on is more political than anything else. As Machjo pointed out, it can't be economic as it just doesn't make sense.

Of course, they can always file a temporary restraining order from the tribal councils, but the final word as to where they will live is up to the tribes, federal gov. does not like to get involved.

I have noticed that. Every time I see someone on TV calling himself a Mohawk I can't help noticing how European he appears. It looks to me like there are a very large number of Canadians claiming aboriginal ancestry who are a good deal less than 50% aboriginal. Ironically in Western Canada there are many people classified as Metis who are more than 3/4 aboriginal, but who are not accorded native status.

Don't forget that the history of occupation in the east is about 500 years, here it is only about 200. Much more assimilation back there. The treaties in the west were also different and more aimed at cultural genocide than the original British treaties of the east.

Genocide? And assimilation is not genocide. Not when Canadians are paying billions of dollars a year to support traditional corrupt native govts. Sovereignty? Not here.
