First they came after Friends.
Now, snowflake Millennials have it out for 007.
The iconic James Bond character has been around for decades, with several famous actors depicting the suave spy, but recently younger viewers have taken issue with some plot lines in the classics.
“Can we just take a moment and appreciate the uproar from activists, if the old school James Bond movies were released now,” one Twitter user said.
Millennials — perhaps used to Daniel Craig’s more stoic portrayal — have taken to Twitter to voice their opinions of past Bonds like Roger Moore, Sean Connery and Timothy Dalton as they watch the vintage films for the first time.
In particular, it seems the young viewers take issue with Sean Connery’s version of the international spy, dubbing him a “sexist wife beater,” “scumbag,” and a “rapist.”
The Scottish actor portrayed Bond in seven films, between 1967 and 1983. His character’s “aggressive” seduction technique with the famous Bond women faced particular harsh criticism.
“Is old schools James Bond a rapist? Sean Connery is pretty damn aggressive (sic),” one user said.
Roger Moore’s 1974 Bond Film The Man with the Golden Gun has also been dubbed racist by new viewers. At one point in the movie, a character from the U.S. South calls people in Bangkok “little brown pointy heads.”
One user said, “The man with the golden gun was just on tv and damn that was so racist it’s hard to believe it was filmed in colour. (sic)”
The newer films haven’t escaped criticism.
In Daniel Craig’s 2012 film Skyfall Bond sneaks into the shower to have sex with Severine, played by Berenice Marlohe. She is killed in the next scene.
One user tweeted, “At least once a week I think about the abominable treatment of Severine in Skyfall.”
