I know someone like that . My junkle.

Sometimes he's my drunkle but that's a whole new storyline.

Guess who phoned for help moving?

Guess who is going on holidays that week?

So you being such a nice guy are doing the moving while your uncle goes on vacation?

Just my subjective preference.... It'd look neat and tidy if they were all grouped in one area of the front lawn and contained within one large boxed in area... but the way it looks in that photo, it's spread out and cluttered lookin.
How long is your reach? Raised beds are boxed 4x4 or 8x8 for a reason. So you can reach in and weed and harvest.

Xeriscape isn't all it's cracked up to be either. My neighbour xeriscaped. It looks fantastic but he spends just as much time weeding and trimming as I do mowing. The landlady over did it on the strawberries but that is fine be me and Petra. We make sure none go to waste.

16 half pint jars of strawberry jam and counting.

I truly believe that people who plant and gardens and feed themselves are at an advantage over the lawn and patio types by a long shot.

I enjoy the hell out of gardening and taking care of my yard because I absolutely hate paying for food. $10 worth of seed will save me $1500-$2000 over the winter a nice lawns saves me on running the heat pump and blower for AC in summer time.

Did I mention I can kick all of my gld buddies asses when it comes to putting thanks to my well maintained and gorgeous lawn?

I'd say there is a simple compromise there, start the chicken farm, but erect a 6' high fence in front to both eliminate the view and for noise attenuation. "Where there's a will there's a way".

No can do. most cities have a bylaw regulating fence height. Usually 4 ft. max in front and 6 in the back.

Well, if it was me I'd just erect that 4' fence on top of a 2' high concrete footing. These bureaucrats can sure piss a guy off.

Mine is 7' 1/2...they don't check. Why would they send somebody with a tape to see how high my fence is when it takes years to get a yard of asphalt to grade the damn gutters?

Totally ridiculous- water belongs on the land upon which it falls until nature disperses it.

Egypt and Ethiopia nearly went to war over Ethiopia planning to build a hydro-electric dam on its part of the Nile River. Egypt of course argued Ethiopia does not have a right to divert the natural flow of water. Strict sovereignty of course would argue that Ethiopia was right. Global considerations though would argue otherwise. In the end, Ethiopia bakced down from the hydro project.

We had a similar argument with the US at one stage when the US was thinking of exploiting water from the Great Lakes, but only on its side of the lakes of course. Needless to say, it woud have affected our side too, but in the end the US did back down so as to maintain friendly relations.

Water conflicts are becoming ever more prevalent in the world.

I was thinking more of the stench.

A cat box or lawn will stink of if you don't clean up after you dog or cat. Clean up after you chickens. They **** on paper just like a puppy.

Probably only check if a neighbour complained. In your case I'm guessing the neighbours are quite happy to have a high fence around you. LOL

I put it up to block out them. As soon as a for sale sign goes up I'm buying them out and pushing the house down so I can have two lots and another puddle.

Mine's 6ft arount the back, and every couple of years, the city does a
blitz to piss off the working guys, ignoring the abondoned lots overgrown
with weeds, many of which I'm assuming are owned by the city due to
unpaid tax's, etc....Selective bylaw enforcement....gotta love it.

They made me take down my barb-wire coils off the top of the fence (it
made the fence more than 6'6" & would have been a barrier to police and
firefighters, I was told), and others that had unlicenced vehicles in their
back yards that weren't in enclosed structures, etc...

I've still got about 3/4 of a mile of coiled barb-wire sitting that I'll put back
up some day once my dogs have lived through their lives. It wasn't up to
prevent police from entering my yard, but the other criminals with no
respect for others property.

This incident took place in Oakland County which is predominantly Republican.

Oakland County elected officials

So, does this mean Republicans don't like vegetables?

I dug a trench along the back fence so if anyone jumps over they fall another 2 unexpected feet (if they land evenly) or one leg keeps going while the other piles up their ass. Someday I'll pound rebar as stakes in the trench to make matters more "uncomfortable".

That reminds me of what the Spaniards did in Valencia when the Prussian Army marched into town under Napoleon ... they dug deep, wide trenches in the road and then they fell like the buffalo, with the soldiers behind pushing the ones in front into the trench.

There is a pic. It's nicely done with well built raised beds. I'll dig it up.

Looks nice to me.

I think a fence is required.

If there is any wildlife, or even pet rabbits, anywhere in the area, they will be attracted to the garden. A fence would keep everyone safer.
