Over 100 years to develop a nation.
Less than a week to completely ruin it.
Mexican president CANCELS meeting with Donald Trump in breakdown of relations between two countries
The Mexican president has cancelled his meeting with Donald Trump in an extraordinary breakdown of relations between the two countries.
Enrique Pena Nieto tweeted: "This morning we informed the White House that I will not attend the scheduled meeting next Tuesday with @POTUS."
He added: "Mexico reiterates its willingness to work with the United States to reach agreements on behalf of both nations."
It comes after the US president claimed construction of a wall on the border with Mexico would start "within months" and that the neighbouring country would pay "100%" of the costs - which are estimated at a whopping $25 billion.
But Mexico has refused to pay a single cent – and Trump had earlier threatened to "cancel the upcoming meeting" in one of his characteristic Twitter rants.
Yesterday Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto addressed the nation to slam Trump's plans for the border wall.
He said: "I regret and disapprove of the decision by the United States to continue with the construction of the wall, which has for years, far from uniting us, divided us.
"Mexico does not believe in walls. I have said time and time again, Mexico will not pay for any wall."
Despite Mexico's rejection of Trump's plans, the billionaire had said US taxpayers will fund the up-front costs.
"We'll be reimbursed at a later date from whatever transaction we make from Mexico," Trump told ABC.
"I'm just telling you there will be a payment. It will be in a form, perhaps a complicated form.
"What I'm doing is good for the United States. It's also going to be good for Mexico. We want to have a very stable, very solid Mexico."
