A Toronto Sun file photo of Doug Musson's Burlington home.
A Christmas-loving senior who has put on an extravagant holiday light display at his home for decades fell from his roof and died while tending to the decorations.
Doug Musson, 82, of Burlington, had been decorating his Spruce Ave. home in the Walkers Line-Lakeshore Rd. area since 1976.
On Monday, he fell from his second-storey roof while trying to fix a leak. He later died in hospital.
“My mom and I were hoping for a miracle. Now we are just are numb,” said his son, Scott Musson, who has always helped his dad set up the lights.
“We have put off the funeral until next week to try and salvage Christmas. That’s what dad would have wanted.”
Doug Musson, who was known for his Christmas light display, died after falling from his roof.
Although this may be the last year for the light display, Musson said he wanted to keep the lights on for at least one more season.
Musson said he knew his dad was on the roof making repairs when he fell.
“I should have been on the roof, but my dad was stubborn. If something had to get done, he would just do it.”
It took the Mussons about six weeks to put up all the lights for the beginning of December.
They never knew exactly how many lights accompanied the other Christmas ornaments and decorations.
In the backyard, most of the house is glass and there are indoor displays.
“When dad was a kid he loved to go see the window displays at stores, so we made window displays,” Musson said.
“The little kids come and think Santa lives here and the adults who come feel like little kids.”
Many tributes to Musson have been posted on social media.
“This is devastating news,” Burlington Mayor Rick Goldring wrote.
“Doug and the Musson family have provided Burlington with a wonderful display of Christmas lights on their home for many, many years. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.”

Sorry about your dad, Boomer. I'm glad something happened to help you cope with your loss.

I have no parents left. My wife's mother is in hospice and could pass away any time. That's where we will be spending Christmas. A very unusual year for us.

My only real regret is that didn’t spend more time with both my parents before his passing.

Sorry to hear you have no parents left, Christmas must be hard sometimes remembering the Christmas season with your parents.. this Christmas is especially difficult for me because of that fact..

KINGSTON — A woman is facing charges after allegedly throwing another woman into a Christmas tree and attacking a man with a knife.
Police say the woman was visiting a Kingston home on Wednesday night, got into an argument with a female resident and threw her into the Christmas tree.
Investigators say she then turned on a male resident and attacked him with a knife, cutting his hand.
They say the man was able to gain control of the woman and officers found her locked out of the apartment, banging on the door and yelling at the people inside to let her in.
The 35-year-old woman is charged with assault with a weapon and breach probation.

Please be advised that all members planning to dash through the snow in a one-horse open sleigh, going over the fields and laughing all the way are required to undergo a Risk Assessment addressing the safety of open sleighs. This assessment must also consider whether it is appropriate to use only one horse for such a venture, particularly where there are multiple passengers. Please note that permission must also be obtained in writing from landowners before their fields may be entered. To avoid offending those not participating in celebrations, we request that laughter is moderate only and not loud enough to be considered a noise nuisance.
Benches, stools and orthopedic chairs are now available for collection by any shepherds planning or required to watch their flocks at night.
While provision has also been made for remote monitoring of flocks by CCTV cameras from a centrally heated shepherd observation hut, all facility users are reminded that an emergency response plan must be submitted to account for known risks to the flocks. The angel of the Lord is additionally reminded that prior to shining his/her glory all around s/he must confirm that all shepherds are wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment to account for the harmful effects of UVA, UVB and the overwhelming effects of Glory.
Following last year’s well publicised case, everyone is advised that EC legislation prohibits any comment with regard to the redness of any part of Mr. R. Reindeer. Further to this, exclusion of Mr. R Reindeer from reindeer games will be considered discriminatory and disciplinary action will be taken against those found guilty of this offence.
While it is acknowledged that gift-bearing is commonly practised in various parts of the world, everyone is reminded that the bearing of gifts is subject to Hospitality Guidelines and all gifts must be registered. This applies regardless of the individual, even royal personages. It is particularly noted that direct gifts of currency or gold are specifically precluded under provisions of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act. Further, caution is advised regarding other common gifts, such as aromatic resins that may initiate allergic reactions.
Finally, in the recent case of the infant found tucked up in a manger without any crib for a bed, Social Services have been advised and will be arriving shortly.
Compliance of these guidelines is advised in order for you to fully participate with the festive spirit.

That could well be titled How the Bureaucracy killed Christmas.
