MIAMI – A moviegoer shot and killed one person and wounded another on Monday when an argument over text messaging in a Tampa Bay area theatre showing the hit new war film "Lone Survivor" erupted in gunfire, authorities said.
Doug Tobin, a spokesman for the Pasco Sheriff's Office, said the shooter was watching the film with his wife when they got into an argument with another couple in the row of seats directly in front of them over texting in the theatre.
At some point, the assailant, who was not immediately identified, brandished a gun and shot both the man he had been arguing with and his female companion, Tobin said.
"The male victim is deceased. The female victim was injured with non-life threatening injuries," he said.
Tobin added that the shooter was detained by a fellow moviegoer before being taken into police custody.
"Lone Survivor," based on a New York Times best seller, stars Mark Wahlberg and tells the story of four Navy SEALs on an ill-fated covert mission against the Taliban in Afghanistan.

Again guns in the hand of someone who has mental issues
We so often get bent out of shape screaming controlling the
gun will mean only criminals will have guns. Not so much
worse crazy people get guns and we don't even notice.
Criminals use guns in their chosen profession as it were.
They use their weapon with discretion crazy people do not.
We should be much more concerned about nut cases with
weapons. We can't stop criminals from having guns and
those with mental issues don't come with label either

The guy was not only a retired police officer, he was a retired captain of the Tampa Bay police, and had been responsible for their tactical team.

How the heck do you prevent a guy like that from having a gun??

Harold Fredrick Shipman[1] (14 January 1946 – 13 January 2004) was a British doctor and one of the most prolific serial killers in recorded history by proven murders with up to 250 murders being ascribed to him.

That's Great Britain for you!!

Shootings happen everyday in gun-mad America. You need to wear bulletproof vests there just to go to school or to the pictures. And yet the Yanks seem to be proud of this fact. They seem to think it makes them big and hard and tough because they go on shooting sprees in their local cinema because they were given the wrong type of popcorn. And they see Britain as some sort of failed state because its citizens don't shoot a school up every week or two. America has an unhealthy obsession with the gun and that's plain to see for anyone who has more commonsense than a Polo mint. Serial killers and murders are also far more prevalent in America than in Britain, which has one of the world's lowest murder rates. I'm glad for my life that I live in good old Blighty and not the land of braindead, gun-toting, trigger-happy amoebas.

The only way something like this can happen is that the shooter was mentally unbalanced. The fact that he was the captain of the police department and a leader of a tactical team doesn't really mean nothing.

Simply because once they are accepted and complete their training they are never psychologically tested ever again. and other than an outright killing such as this, they will never be held accountable.

(CNN) -- Two children were taken to a hospital after a report of a shooting at Berrendo Middle School in Roswell, New Mexico, a spokeswoman for the hospital said Tuesday.
They were taken to Eastern New Mexico Medical Center, where their conditions were not immediately available, she said.
The state Department of Public Safety said in a news release that state and local police were called to the school at 8:11 a.m. and that "there are preliminary reports of injury," though their number and extent were not immediately known.
State Police Public Information Officer Emmanuel Gutierrez said the threat had been "alleviated" and children were being bused from the school.
The Roswell Police Department's Facebook page said a suspect has been apprehended.
The Facebook post by Roswell police said the school was placed on lockdown after the shooting.

Yet again

Guns don't kill people; people kill people. If school children, teachers, parents, school bus drivers, shop clerks, waiters, and street cleaners were all armed, this kind of thing just wouldn't happen. It's time we make it the law that every able-bodied person over the age of five is appropriately armed and fined if not properly armed.

Funny though......

You seem to just ache to pick on the USA...........which has a murder rate of 4.7 per 100,000.

Not Bermuda, a British possession, that just happens to have exceptionally tough gun control, and a murder rate of 12.3 per 100,000.

Or Honduras, with tough gun control and a murder rate of 91.6 per 100,000.

Or any of the other 103 countries with a worse murder rate than the USA. Or the world altogether, in which the mean rate is 1 1/2 times that of the USA.

Sour grapes I think. The prodical son has eclipsed the mother, to the point of saving her twice in the past 100 years from her enemies on the continent........

Or maybe it is just ***** envy.

Who knows??

A shoot out in a dark theatre probably wouldnt end well. Armed or unarmed in that situation random people are bound to be shot.

Florida widow of man shot in theater describes 'rare' date
Barbara Liston, Reuters
First posted: Wednesday, January 22, 2014 02:32 PM EST | Updated: Wednesday, January 22, 2014 02:42 PM EST
ORLANDO - The widow of a man killed in a Florida movie theater last week cried on Wednesday as she described how the joy over a rare date with her husband was shattered by a stranger's gunshot.
Nicole Oulson's husband, Chad, 43, was shot on Jan. 13 by retired police officer Curtis Reeves, 71, during an argument over cellphone texting in the theater, authorities said.
Reeves, who has been charged with second-degree murder, was annoyed that Chad Oulson was using his phone to text during previews before the start of combat drama "Lone Survivor," and an altercation ensued, police said. Oulson was texting his 22-month-old daughter's babysitter, they said.
Nicole Oulson was hit in the hand by the same bullet that struck her husband in the chest, and her wound was still bandaged during a news conference at her attorneys' law office in Tampa.
"Just to think that in the blink of an eye, my whole world just got shattered into a million pieces," she said in her first public comments since the shooting. "And now I'm left trying to pick them up and put them all back together, and it's so hard and it's so unbearable."
Reeves said he fired his .380-caliber semiautomatic handgun in self defense after something hit him in the face inside the theater in Wesley Chapel, 25 miles northeast of Tampa.
Witnesses saw Chad Oulson throw a bag of popcorn, the sheriff's office said. Authorities said they did not think Florida's Stand Your Ground law, which allows people to use deadly force to defend themselves if they believe their life is in danger, would apply.
Nicole Oulson did not offer any new details on Wednesday about the argument, although her lawyer, TJ Grimaldi, said she has a "very clear recollection of what happened."
Oulson said she and Chad had been out enjoying rare time alone, away from their young daughter.
"Me and my husband didn't get a date night very often, much less a whole day to spend together, so I was just so excited and looking forward to spending the day with the love of my life at a place of entertainment, you know, family entertainment," she said.
Grimaldi said his firm is representing Oulson as a victim as well as an eyewitness in the criminal case, and in a planned civil lawsuit, which he would not discuss in detail.
The law firm is accepting donations for a memorial fund to help the Oulson family. The couple's daughter is too young to understand what happened, Grimaldi said.
"All she knows is Daddy is not there," he said.
