Man offers his house to homeless family for a year

By Lee Cowan

(CBS News) For most parents, when a child leaves the nest it's usually for good. But at age 51, Tony Tolbert has come home again. And it's for all the right reasons -- or so says his mom.
"He is so giving, and he's always been that way," said Marie Tolbert.
Tony grew up in a home that always seemed to have a spare bed -- thanks to his father - Jimmy Tolbert.
An entertainment lawyer in Los Angeles, Tolbert's dad extended a hand to almost anyone down on their luck. In fact, Tolbert can't remember a time there wasn't someone extra living in their house -- and that gave the Harvard-educated attorney an idea.
He decided to take his dad's generosity one step further.
He announced he was moving back home, because he was giving up his own fully furnished L.A. home, rent free, for a full year -- to a family he'd never even met.

I'm thinking there must be a tax advantage to doing this.
Of course. You donate "one year free rent" to a registered charity shelter, they give you a receipt for the value of one year's rent.

When they leave after the year you renovate the "rental property" and use that credit too as maintenance and up keep, plus reno grants for rental propeties.

Then you move back in to your freshly renovated through tax credits and grants, home and your parents do the same after you've rented from them.

You old conniver, Petros-:) Hey, went to Helmut's yesterday, bought garlic head cheese and bacon. Head cheese is good, I like the looks of the store, very clean and spotless, nice looking meat in the counter. Quite a few girls working but no one who looked like a "Helmut".

No I am in no way affiliated to the business but make a point of travelling to thier Vernon location monthly for thier sausage. If you are unfamiliar with them they are the son and daughter of Helmut and Paula who had H&P sausage for years in Oyama and later in Vernon. All of thier sausage is made inhouse in Vernon and is fantastic. I recommend trying them out they are located just south of Leathead rd on Hwy 97...enjoy

PS:they also have hot breakfast sandwiches and lunchs.

I'm a little confused Leathead Rd. is in Kelowna! In Vernon they are located on 48 Ave. near 20 St.
