Brit becomes first in world to have prostate removed due to faulty gene

A British businessman at risk of prostate cancer has become the first in the world to have the organ removed

The 53-year-old, who has not been identified, discovered that he was carrying a “faulty” BRCA2 gene that has been linked to aggressive forms of both breast and prostate cancer.

The pre-emptive action will greatly reduce his chances of developing the disease.

A similar decision was recently taken by Angelina Jolie, the actress, who had a double mastectomy after testing positive for the defective BRCA1 gene which led to the death of her mother from breast cancer.

The British man, who is married with children, said he was keen to avoid the fate of relatives who had suffered from either breast or prostate cancer.

Doctors were initially reluctant to carry out the procedure, according to reports, as removing the prostate can have serious consequences.

The man’s prostate had appeared healthy and screening tests did not detect any abnormalities.
Doctors were eventually persuaded to operate when a tissue sample showed up microscopic malignant changes.
Experts were said to have been astonished when they examined the prostate after surgery to discover there was a considerable level of undetected cancer.
Ya know, it always amazes me how we rely upon doctors to know everything, but when push comes to shove it is our life and our decision. Look at this guy...cancer was already there but did not show up -yet-. Good for him for having the strength and courage to do what he knew was right for him.

What good is a functioning d i c k if you are dying?

What good are perky breasts if you are dying?

We need to take charge of our health and have ownership for it.

good on him!!!

""As well as leaving the patient infertile, it can also lead to permanent incontinence and sexual dysfunction.""

Infertile is good.................

Sexual dysfunction..............mehhhh, not so much.

Permanent incontinence.................THAT would piss me off !!..........Not punny, really. I couldn't walk around smelling like a piss tank, which, after all the talking about the "positive" aspects is done, is what would happen.

Men rarely die of prostate cancer. Usually it spreads to some other organ or somesuch and we die from that. This fellow caught it early and did a brave thing.

Don't think I could.

I have real doubts about the reliability of genetic markers.. for pathologies of all sorts. It's especially questionable when it concerns behaviour. Some dipsh*t lab found a genetic marker for homosexuality recently. Of course this isn't a 'faulty' gene.. just a 'natural' one.. and obviously human free will is powerless in the face of this genetic dictator.

The actual origin and process of diseases and especially cancers is not well understood. Neither is the interaction of genes, amongst themselves and with the environment. And the potential danger from radical surgery for the removal of ovaries, breasts, prostrate might far outweigh the likelihood of the developing the disease in the first place or treating it when if it does occur. A regime of healthy living seems much more sensible approach.

The whole genetic industry is inundated with political and economic agendas... with quacks everywhere.

Absolutely you could, early death is not a good alternative.

To go out with a bang? :?

To go out being banged?? :? :?

lol... no matter how old we get, it's still too early ;-)

Um, there always comes a point where living does not out weight death..... perhaps there's a new topic to debate.

When is death more preferable than life?

Someone else can start that thread, I gotta go pee...... hmmm... that's the 16th time today, how odd.
