British billionaire Hamish Harding is one of five people onboard the submarine

A massive search and rescue effort is under way in the North Atlantic after a submarine exploring the wreck of the Titanic went missing on Sunday.

The research vessel Polar Prince lost contact with the Titan submersible an hour and 45 minutes into its dive.

It is believed there are five people on board the submarine, including Hamish Harding, a 59-year-old British billionaire businessman and explorer.

The US Coast Guard estimates the sub has between 70 and 96 hours of emergency oxygen.

The Coast Guard’s First District reported early Wednesday that a Canadian P-3 aircraft detected underwater noises in the area where crews are looking for the missing Titan submersible and operations were redirected there. Those efforts “have yielded negative results but continue,” the Coast Guard tweeted.

P-3, damn. I flew across the Pacific in one of them. Best flight I ever had.

Reminds me a bit of when Evel Knievel jumped the Snake River Canyon.

He was pretty much sitting in a cardboard soapbox with a jet engine attached to the back. He had no idea what he was getting into...not unlike these passengers on this submersible tin can.

They knew what they were getting into, or at least 2 of them did anyway. That vessel was self-certified, NOT independently certified and had a string of issues before this trip.

Don't mess with the dead. Crazy how deep that ended up being. Could be wrong but believe one of the richest men in the world went down with the Titanic back when. Now they got four more.

For the record from when they started counting more than 3 million boats have sank although they don't know if they have them all and 50 large boats sink every year. People overlook the risk. Without looking it hard to guess if there were more airplane disasters or not.

How stupid can a billionaire be? Maybe they were not really them and there is an insurance scam yet to go down. Hard to prove things now.

Its about adventure and risk. If a stupid, rich Spanish Queen didnt fund a loopy Italian Captain to build a fleet of long range sailing ships, North America would be Chinese.

Once they got to North America where trees were bigger and taller, ships got bigger and faster which kicked off global trade.
