Looking back over the thread, I noticed the comment about the oil and agriculture industries in Lloyd (I guess I should get used to calling it that). The father of the main characters is employed in the oil industry, and a "haunted," abandoned farm house a bit outside of town will play a significant role in the story.
sounding good Scott

and just to give you a heads up, little girls in Canada often play hockey and if they have brothers will choose to play hockey over figure skating

all of my friend's girls played hockey ;-)

may sound weird but they do

The pink helmets are cute.
lol... I love when they can hardly walk and there they are bundled into the hockey gear...

on the other hand my girlfriends kid had been taking figure skating for a few years and cried when she got new skates for her birthday, she flings one down..."I want hockey skates"...so she got them...

when she got on the ice omg...skate rings around the others because of the figure skating prior

This is why dogs are BIG in Saskatchewan. They don't get blown over. Takes two men and a boy just to walk them.
The wind is also why the only pilots that come from Sask are combine pilots. Dogs in Alberta will sometimes swim across a river to get a drink of water, we make those ones yard pets.

I assume somebody did clue her into the point of the game included the puck and net via stick part of how hockey differs.

...... if they have brothers will choose to play hockey over figure skating
Same with little brothers.

It's both her figure skating and hockey skates combined. The blades are that different.

Rural Alberta is like Mississippi has a lot of rednecks and they say eh a lot. Lloydminster is on the border of the province of Alberta and Saskatchewan. The best way to write the book is write about it in the Mississippi point of view and Canadianize it

The girl (and a younger sister, for that matter) are following in their mother's footsteps by figure skating. I actually briefly thought about having both main characters be hockey players, but I decided against it to give some variety.

Unlike Alberta where you just grab a beer and order a hooker. The rest of the story probably wouldn't qualify as a children's book unless Davey Crocket is sitting in that class.

Don't be silly... Beer is dropped-off at your home by a hooker... 2 if you order more than a flat

Lloyd has a bylaw that girls can only play ringette... Gets 'em use to sweeping.

Sorry, but it's the law

Oddly enough, AB produced a high level male figure skater from a small town in Alberta (Caroline). Strange because the vast majority of winter sport (read: damn near 100%) would be hockey players... I can't imagine how buddy would have ever got ice time

no need to clue her in, she had been going to her brothers games forever, threw the gear on and away she went, did take a minute to figure out there are no picks on hockey skates

exactly, no picks, that took her a minute or two to adjust to

Would a Saskatchewanian use the phrase "flew off the handle" or "had a meltdown," or is there a different phrase that would be better used?
