This guy did. The sale of this collection would have been a substantial chunk of his retirement. Overnight they had no monetary value. He was not compensated for that loss. They just became worthless with the swipe of a pen.
Ban overnight all handguns and whatever is eventually determined to be 'assault weapons' that non-criminals have purchased and what becomes of their property? They can't use them any longer and they can't sell them? Then what?
Lets use your analogy of a 'sports car' (whatever that is). Lets say that any vehicle with more than 200hp that isn't registered commercially becomes a 'sports car' as a definition and the gov't (for your own good and the safety of the public) decides to make them illegal overnight with a swipe of a pen, and you own three of these vehicles (two of them that you're still making payments on). Overnight they have no monetary value and you can't use them or license them or sell them. Then what? Do you happily turn them over to a smelter or the Police or whatever with zero compensation? Would you be upset? Would the bank say that you're absolved of the balance of your debt on the two that you're still making payments on? Does this sound farfetched or just something that hasn't happened yet?
What's a 'sports car?' It's whatever you're told that it is on the list.....right?

I'm not a gun owner, nor have I even been, and most likely never will be. I'm just trying to look at the bigger picture and it is what it is. Anyway, it's getting late in this time zone so I'm pretty much done for one night. This was entertaining. I was just flabbergasted earlier with the whole "If it's on a list then that's what it is" comment and that opens the door for so much abuse by the authorities regardless if we're talking about handguns or sports cars or assault weapons (whatever definition is used for the last to things).
If you could find a way to impact the criminals and not harm those that are the law abiding, I'd be right on side with you, but not at the expense of those that haven't done anything wrong.
Make a fertilizer one out of one of the round metal granaries or culvert.

I wan't to see the criminals disarmed and not the common law abiding citizens. Come up with a plan to disarm the criminals first and the winds might blow your way. Right now, aren't you curious about the opposition to your position by those that don't even own a firearm?
I want to see illegal smuggling snuffed out on our leaky boarder regarding handguns. I want the 'Saturday Night Special Street Gun' to go away 'cuz that's shits real and more common all the time, and I don't think a handgun ban will change that. I don't want the armed criminals to know that the law abiding aren't armed due to you proposed ban....but that there's a real posibility that we might be.
