By the way:

In the past, the City of Montreal has dumped wastewater into the river from the same interceptor sewer.
■Spring 2003 : 10 billion litres
■Fall 2003 : 7.6 billion litres
■Fall 2005 : 770 million litres

Here's a rundown of other Canadian cities where dumps of raw sewage have taken place:

Halifax

Raw sewage was continuously pumped into the Halifax harbour until a new wastewater treatment plant was constructed in 2008. However, sewage continued to be discharged into the harbor unknowingly, when sewer lines were cut during construction.

Winnipeg

Roughly 185-million litres of raw sewage have been dumped into Winnipeg's rivers since 2004 due to the city's antiquated combined-sewer system. The city says that massive upgrades need to be made to the older sewer system, which could cost the city up to $4 billion.

Victoria and Esquimalt

The region pumps about 130-million litres of raw sewage daily into the Juan de Fuca Strait, a channel leading to the Pacific Ocean. Victoria and Esquimalt have been in a longtime battle with the federal and provincial government concerning their sewage treatment practices and have been struggling to find a site for a new treatment plant for years.

Toronto

In July 2013, Toronto was pounded with 126 millimetres of rain in under two hours. More than a billion litres of sewage and storm water overflowed onto city streets and cascaded into Toronto's harbour.

Heavy rains often overwhelm Toronto's old sewer system, forcing the city to bypass water-treatment plants and send raw sewage into Lake Ontario

The Liberals have been in power about a week and a half, and now all the problems created by Harper's gang are now
the fault of the Liberals...strange???.

Methinks you are jumping the gun a little, albeit I think Justin is embarking on some stupid things. Less haste, less waste!

Harper said no to the dump, Trudeau said yes. How is this unclear?

I'm definitely no expert on the matter, but common sense tells me you can't repair a sewer when it's full of sh*t. :) :)

They're going to relocate the expressway, which means that the major sewer line has to be relocated and repaired; it's 5m in diameter. You can't work on it when it's full of sewage, as others have said.

I was in YVR many time this year and over the summer, there was an advisory that False Creek had a dangerously high concentration of fecal form bacteria.
That's Goose sh!t as anyone who lives here knows they infest local beaches & shorelines.

That's one reason I like swimming @ the dog beach they keep the Geese away and the beach/water is always clean; beaches, shorelines & parks where dogs are banned are the ones with issues.

Perhaps another option would be to not relocate the expressway there or actually treat the sh-it in the sewer line and don't put anymore into it until the expressway is moved.

Can't see Harpo not agreeing. He hates to be second best and the sewer was more full of shyte than him

...of course, if he thought, for a moment, it might hurt his chances

too late for that now isn't it?

When it comes to volume, Montreal is the hands down winner.

At least, they're not dumping it in a lake. The St. Lawrence is a huge and fast moving river with no other peers on this continent ( or any other). That sewage will be in tide water in a couple of days and it will be in ocean water in about a week+-.

Gone.

What? Are they going to empty the sewer line, repair it and then relocate it? That doesn't make any sense.
Why didn't they start building a NEW sewer line years ago, complete it and then empty the old sewer line into the new one and none of this 'dumping' fiasco would have been necessary?

I don't understand why the people in charge of infrastructures always spend, spend, spend on other stuff and let their structures and services go to pot. Then there's a big panic about how this needs repair and that is falling apart. It would make more sense and be cheaper to keep up with maintenance as it is needed.

Sewer lines aren't sexy! :)

You can only do that for so long too. You can't go for a boat ride out of L.A. without dodging turds every 50'.

Relocating it WOULD repair it - both line and snow dump - as in order it's written. There are several links throughout the thread if you want to know why - and a whole lot of BS if you're the type who feeds from propaganda.

Does seem a little whack, eh?
