Hey those are some slick moves alright. But what about doing what a fighter like that is made to do? I don't know much about fighters like that but what do all these have to do with warfare?

Not very much. The days of the dog fight are pretty much over. Air to air missiles have advanced far beyond the old Sidewinder. These days a detected lock on means you had better start using all the tools you have to evade a missile that was fired by somebody who probably never saw anything but a blip on a screen. If your battle is being supervised by Awacs, you have a much better chance.

No doubt the Russians have a great aircraft there but to quickly count out the F-22 and Eurofighter would be a mistake. Great fighters aren't based on if they can recover from a stall or land on a farmer's field.

Years ago the MIG 25 was feared until the US got their hands on one and found out that it had many problems. Airshows are one thing, combat is another.

The same critisism came out against the M1 tank vs Soviet tanks before Desert Storm. Folks said the M1 wont work and would break down in extreme heat, that it was made for the European theater. When all was said and down, British, French, and US tanks rolled right through them destroying every Soviet made tank. Yes, they were not manned by Russians but range and manuverability, night fighting capabilities were lacking.

Nor should the Russians be underestimated either. They are a hardy people and know how to fight and know how to make fighting platforms.
Yeah. Not counting anything out but I can only go by what I see. The Russian plane looked more impressive in maneouverability. Maybe it falls out of the sky as soon as it launches a missile, I don't know. But the F-22 didn't look near as acrobatic.
And then on the other hand, you put a monkey behind the wheel of anything and pretty soon there are dents. lol I would imagine a plane is only as good as its pilot.

lmao a built in warrantee voider. Nifty. Figures that the US would install such a thing after they build it. Autos next? Watches? Trains? Buses?
That has made more than one troop look around for a 'not for export' sticker. Little do they know it can also be turned off should they point their barrels in the wrong direction.
Eagle-smack knows that the Iraqi Forces were blind, the part of the discussion he balks at entering is that the reason for Iraq's initial invasion. Slant drilling by American Companies into Iraqi oil-fields. It should be well documented which wells were disabled. Logs from those same sites would show the location of the bore-hole. Reluctance would be similar to admission of slant-drilling. A hanging offense without trial in the west.

Really... I balked at that? Care to tell me when?

Slant drilling by US companies. Kuwait supplied very little of the oil imported by the US. Canada and Saudi are our major suppliers

Saddam accused Kuwait of slant drilling before the invasion. That was his excuse. Of course you believe him because you are a Saddam apologist. Anyone who is against the US is good in your books. However the invasion also happened after Saddam asked Kuwait to forgive the debt Iraq owed Kuwait for loans given during the Iran-Iraq War. Kuwait refused and Saddam invaded.

Iraqi forces were blind because we went after all their radar. You can do that in war...bomb things like the enemy's radar and stuff.

What American companies are you referring to, and where are they drilling from?

If you want to see a airshow come down to the Fort Lauderdale Airshow (I think last weekend in April 2010). I saw the F-22 do things that no other aircraft in the world can do.not even the Mig 31 or Harrier. Plus by the time you know it is around your (if your lucky your in a parachute). The Mig 35 I don't believe is in production yet. Keep in mind that no Russian aircraft or any aircraft has ever shot down a F-15.

Personally, I prefer the SR-71 Blackbird http://www.answers.com/topic/sr-71-blackbird-1 to think it was built origionally as a fighter.

The early Mig21s, the Mig29s, and almost all the new Russian fighters are capable of landing on unimproved grass runways. I shudder to think what would happen to the vaunted F-18 if it tried to land on a dirt runway.

The F-18 might be able to do it (Carrier landing are rough), the F-16 I wouldn't be to sure of.

We saw one of those Blackbirds. They're huge. Massive engines. I think they said that "scramjet" engines were being developed for them, too. Hard to see them as fighters, though, I agree.

This might be right, in fact there may be no official MiG35. Looking at Wikipedia page i was redirected to when i entered Mig35 was for a MiG-MFI development project for a 5th Generation Fighter which would compete with the F22 Raptor and Eurofighter.

You can see the profile at the bottom of the page looks much more advanced than the Russian jet shown here. I still contend that one looks like a MiG29, with winglets, thrust vectoring, and stability control avionics. That aircraft is a contemporary of the F15, and well over 30 years old.

I guess i missed the hyphen. That one looks more like the subject jet. But my point remains it still looks like an updated MiG29.

All of those, the F14, F15, F16 and F18 are all Gen 4 aircraft. Alll iterations of the same level of technology. The 5th generation really started with the F19, which had stealth technology, but was really a bomber, not a fighter. It goes something like this..

Gen 1 -Sabres, MiG15, Hawker Hunter - early 50s
Gen 2 -the century series F102, F104 etc, MiG17 - mid 50s
Gen 3 -F4, Avro Arrow, MiG21- early 60s
Gen 4 -F14 etc - early 70s
Gen 5 -F22, MiG-MFI, Eurofighter - mid 00s

There was really a generation that preceded all this, with the first jet fighters - the German Me262, the British Canberra.. but these were deemed not significant enough to warrant a 'generation' designation.

I think we have seen the end of fantastically maneuverable manned aircraft, to bad though they are beautiful to watch. The Mikoyan Design Bureau really made some great looking aircraft. Like the Raptor the Mig 1.44 is just to expensive and to late. It does look a lot like the Mig 29 though.

The aircraft in the topic opener is an Su-30MKi. It is not some kind of modified Mig 29. It has all the thrust vectoring tricks of the F-22, and will land on unimproved runways. I don't think these aircraft should be taken lightly.

That looks more like it. But some research indicates that the Su30 is a technological upgrade of the Su27, a fighter of early 1970s vintage. The Su30 would then be more comparable to the F15E Strike Eagle, the most advanced and last of the Eagle enhanced versions, than the F22. But no doubt its an impressive aircraft, as i said before, on an older airframe.
