In 1940, aged 14, Princess Elizabeth gave her first speech to her country as it was engulfed in one of the darkest periods of its history. She was sat alongside her younger sister Princess Margaret as she made the speech.

Nobody at the time knew, of course, that the young Princess Elizabeth would go on to become the longest-reigning and probably greatest-ever British monarch.

Today would have been the great woman's 100th birthday...

"I declare before you all..."

In 1947, in South Africa, in the wake of the British victory in the war, Princess Elizabeth in her 21st birthday speech declared that as Queen she will devote the rest of her life to her people, a promise she very much kept...

I agree.

You Canadians have Victoria Day because she is seen as a key founder of Canada. But we don't have national days celebrating monarchs here in Britain. But it would be nice to have one in honour of Elizabeth II. Whatever you may think of the monarchy I think it's generally regarded that Queen Elizabeth II was a great woman who wanted to do what is best for her peoples. Remember that she should never have been Queen. She only got that role because her uncle King Edward VIII abdicated in 1936. And then in 1947 a young lady aged just 21 vowed to dedicate the rest of her life to her people once she becomes Queen - and she did just that until she died in 2022. So I think we should have a national day in her honour.

King and Queen visit Elizabeth II's clothing exhibition

In celebration of what would have been the late Queen Elizabeth II's 100th birthday, King Charles III and Queen Camilla visited the Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life In Style Exhibition.

The exhibit at the the King's Royal Collection is the largest collection of the late Queen's clothing ever mounted and shows some of the most striking items such as her Christening robe, Coronation Gown and Wedding Dress.

The King was greeted by well-wishers - including Americans (our American allies love all this British royal stuff) shouting out where they are from - as he arrived to marvel at his mother's wonderful wardrobe....

In 2022, in the year of her death, a poll discovered that 52% of the British people think that Queen Elizabeth II should be called Elizabeth the Great, just like the Russian tsar was named Catherine the Great. It shows the huge popularity she had amongst the British people.
