King Charles III has addressed the nation on what would have been his mother Queen Elizabeth II's 100th birthday...

In 1940, aged 14, Princess Elizabeth gave her first speech to her country as it was engulfed in one of the darkest periods of its history. She was sat alongside her younger sister Princess Margaret as she made the speech.

Nobody at the time knew, of course, that the young Princess Elizabeth would go on to become the longest-reigning and probably greatest-ever British monarch.

Today would have been the great woman's 100th birthday...


"I declare before you all..."

In 1947, in South Africa, in the wake of the British victory in the war, Princess Elizabeth in her 21st birthday speech declared that as Queen she will devote the rest of her life to her people, a promise she very much kept...
