"Keep the Oil in the Soil": Ecuador Seeks Money to Keep Untapped Oil Resources Underground

As delegates discuss various ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Copenhagen, Ecuador has a simple message: keep untapped oil in the ground. Ivonne Yanez is an environmental activist from Ecuador, one of the larger oil producing countries in Latin America. Ecuador is believed to be sitting on an oil reserve of hundreds of millions of barrels. But the oil is located in the Yasuni National Park, one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. Ecuador has launched a unique campaign to have the international community compensate the country in exchange for keeping the oil in the ground.

Since she doesn't want progress let's keep the women in the kitchen. Nice cleavage by the way.

Have you noticed the eco-nuts always say, "one of the most biodiverse places on the planet", about everywhere on the planet.

Good luck on this one... hell, Ecuador has big lithium reserves as well, but they are looking to big mining companies to develop the resource, but only if the battery mfgrs agree to build factories to mfgr the batteries in Ecuador.

Take about being hypocrites

How do you expect to tank-up your tractor?

We already do keep resources in the ground and use them as collateral on loans from IMF. They are called National and Provincial Parks. Some were lost by default and are now "UNESCO World Heritage Centers".

I keeping wondering why Canada is so anxious to ship as much and as fast as they can our non-renewable resource to China. There is not an infinite supple here and shouldn't we think of our future generational needs.

While i have a problem with some of their plan at least they are demanding some
tangible benefit for the citizens of their county. In Canada we don't demand the
amount that we could get either. If not more Royalties then value added what's
wrong with that? I think we should demand value added on oil products and wood
leaving the country so why not them>

It was rhetorical. I don't need an obvious comment.

:compress:That's pretty funny. really .

One should be prepared for both non obvious and obvious comments. The non obvious are usually hidden, and are therefore non obvious. Hence, may not even be comments. Even to rhetorical questions.

We need the cash, correct? What good would sitting on resources do for us?
yes, we need enough to get by for now and the long term. What is happening now is, we are losing on both ends. The oil and billions of dollars leaving our country.
