My piss-me-off from the mailbox came in a new hydro bill demanding $259/mo from what had been a crazy $169/mo for what isn't even 900 sq ft and heated by gas. I get $1172/mo on ODSP, and Hydro One wants 22% of it. Get rid of that internal pyramid of step-up profit generators (the debt, OPG, whoever it is that delivers the stuff and the office stuff with the greedy hands) and give us back Ontario Hydro. Sorry, but deregulation was neither Wynne nor McGuinty's baby
Pity .

So who was in charge the last 11 years as the rates soared? Certainly not McGuinty or Wynne.

AB went through our deregulation some years ago and like yourself, the prices jumped.

That said, when you crunched the numbers, the price increase was a reflection of the real costs of the stuff, more so than a money grab by the private sector.

All the time prior to dereg, the AB gvt was operating those services at a loss in order to offer cheap energy, but although the monthly bill was lower, the gvt made up the difference in taxes.

.... And no, when the gvt sold-off the facilities, they did not lower the taxes

It seems to me the energy cost increase is more caused by McSquinty's closing of all those coal power plants without replacing the power. Less supply, same demand = higher prices.

Privitization may or may not have been a good thing but Wynne and McSquinty have been around since 2003. Plenty of time to correct the situation if they so desired. I contend McSquinty made it worse.

Also imagine the provincial deficit if the Ontario governent was still absorbing Ontario Hydro's deficit.

Should have gone for the coal fired plants instead of the expensive alternative energy ones.

They had the coal-fired ones - and bowed to the people who saw smoke so they went to gas - and set them up in a place where urban growth was overtaking the site - and cancelled the project halfway through. Nobody said you needed brains to be a government - but anyone knows a system has to be maintained (except, maybe, Ontario governments of EVERY stripe)

They were replacing the power. Did you hear about a gas plant scandal? McGuinty tried correcting the situation by setting up a competing system. That went over well

Hydro's deficit would never have been so high had somebody not "fixed" HEPCofO's original mandate to provide power AT COST

They tried to but then they cancelled it because they were in Lieberal ridings and they didn't like them. They also tried to replace them with windmills and such but I don't think they have actually replaced the power. I think they are importing more power (all coal powered ironically) from the US which is more expensive.

So who was in charge during the orgy of nuclear power plants with attendant cost over-runs? So who was in charge when Hydro Electric Power Commission of Ontario's mandate was changed from power at cost for the people of Ontario to subsidized? So who was in charge when maintenance of the plant and system was deferred due to cost constraint? So who was in charge when Hydro started selling in upstate New York at LESS than cost? So who was in charge when Hydro was offed (along with its debt) to the for profit sector? Point fingers at one particular party if you want ... then check out some reality. It's the stupidity of ALL Ontario governments in their efforts to chase profit

I think you'll find Ontario hydro is sold to the United States at LESS than cost

Anyone know where I can get a high-efficient extension cord 60 miles long so I can plug into Hydro Quebec?

That is just stupid. Certainly this could have been corrected since 2003?

Could have been ... but then the sales would go to Hydro Quebec and Ontario would be producing over demand. You can shut down a turbine ... but not a reactor. Someone just isn't wearing their thinking cap
I would try Canadian Tire.

;-) You shoulda seen the look on the counter guy when I asked. I half expected people with butterfly nets to follow me past the door....

Windmills. Gas Plant cancellations. Dormant windmills that net 50 G a year per annum no matter what. It ain't all Harris LS?
