Kael McKenzie sworn in as 1st transgender judge in Canadian history

Canada's first transgender judge was sworn in today in Winnipeg.

After being appointed to the bench in mid-December, former Crown attorney Kael McKenzie officially took his seat in the Manitoba court Friday.

"Kael is the first self-identified transgender judge in Canada and that is something to be celebrated," a judge said to a crowd of applause at the swearing-in ceremony.

"Kael is a proud member of the Manitoba Métis Nation. His appointment can only serve to strengthen public confidence in the administration of justice in this province."

McKenzie was praised for his involvement in the legal community before saying a few words himself.

"I'm just so grateful for the faith that's been bestowed upon me," McKenzie said.

He started off by honouring his heritage, acknowledging the ceremony was taking place on Treaty 1 land, and explained that his experiences in the Canadian Forces and as a transgender man have helped him feel connected to Manitoba.

Outpouring of support

When news of the appointment broke in December, McKenzie said he received an outpouring of support from family, friends and strangers from across the country.

The appointment helped some Canadians embrace their own gender identity, McKenzie said. He even had parents of transgender kids explain how important the announcement was for them.

"They acknowledged their fears for their childrens' futures, and somehow my appointment helped allay some of those fears," he said.

"They came out with a message of renewed hope that their children would have bright and prosperous futures, regardless of their gender identity."

The parent of two ended by thanking his wife and kids.

"I have two great sons. This day would not be complete without them," he said. "They've been the centre of my universe and I love them very much. I'm glad they agreed to miss school today."

A token of the sad state of the Canadian judiciary.. now filled with preening bureaucrats and grasping political hacks. Certainly a narcissistic, degenerate, delusional, fantasy ridden intellect.. in mortal combat with his Creator.. will fit right in with the mediocrities that fill the Bench to the highest level in SCOC.

that is all that is required by this government because equality is so much more important than merit.

Your folks' transphobia is shameful.

Maybe we can talk, instead, about how the Honourable Justice Kael McKenzie, before his appointment to the Provincial Court of Manitoba, was an accomplished barrister with Chapman Goddard Kagan, and a Crown prosecutor in family, commercial, and civil law. Let's talk about how Justice McKenzie co-chaired the Canadian Bar Association's sexual orientation and gender identity conference for three years; how Justice McKenzie was vice-president of the Manitoba Bar Association; how Justice McKenzie was has spent several years serving in the Canadian Forces.

Maybe we can acknowledge that if it were a cis-gendered white male appointed to a provincial court, nobody would be batting an eye. Instead, at the appointment of Canada's first transgendered person to the bench, the conservative mouth-breathers suddently revert to "What?! A trans* judge? No way they're qualified for judicial office!" Maybe you don't see it, but it's transphobia, plain and simple.

He has been in the law profession or he wouldn't be given the job
Only in America can you be elected and not have the credentials
Of course in America they even elect their dog catcher don't they?
And where did the religious thing about his creator come in?
And who is his creator his parents I guess.

Depends if he gets to be the Judge on sexual orientation cases where his situation would make him unsuitable in that his ruling could be easily appealed. As far as other cases it wouldn't be an issue.

Oh, he would be "unsuitable?"

A trans* person shouldn't be allowed any judicial involvement in a case in which sexual orientation is a factor? Should only cis-gendered, heterosexual justices be allowed to hear cases involving sexual orientation? Last I heard, heterosexuality is also a sexual orientation.
