Back in 1989 I worked a warehouse job. The starting pay was $11.50 per hour.

I drove by the old place this year and saw a sign advertising my old job. Starting pay? $11.50 per hour!

That's 28 years later, folks! Something is definitely screwed up in this world. A 'race to the bottom' indeed!

That is because they are not government employees.

It is a pretty well documented fact that most of the increase in wealth in the USA and Canada since the 1980s has gone to the top 10%. That doesn't leave much for the rest of us.

Northern Ontario,
In the industry I was working in, most raises at contract time were across the board raises, not percentage raises, meaning that if the top guy got a 2$ per hr. raise ....so did the bottom guy...
When I started working I was making $2 an hour and the top guy on the paper machine was making $5 an hour, more than double.....
There were 6 levels of operation on a machine.
When I retired 29 years later at the top....I was making about $27 an hour while the bottom guy made $20 per hour
Just imagine what it would have been with straight percentage raises....

No, as long as it's not at the expense of Canadian workers.........

And how does making socks in the US hurt Canadian workers? By that logic, would creating socks in Canada hurt US workers? what's the criterion?

Maybe I haven't explained this before.

I am a Canadian who lives in Canada and believes Canada and Canadians should come first, not Americans, not Chinese, not Europeans etcetera.

By your logic Canada should not produce anything because it may hurt workers of other countries which would reduce Canada to beggar status.......

So what's the difference between your logic and if I said:

"I am a white man who lives in an officially English and French country and believes Whites and English and French Canadians should come first, not Jews, indigenous peoples, the deaf, etc."

I'm just trying to understand, thanks.

Also, how would open borders reduce Canada to beggar status. Is that really how low of an opinion you have of Canadian's capabilities?

And Whites are Canadians, Argentinians, Britons, Australians, etc. What's the difference?

It seems like we're saying discrimination on the basis of race, gender, ethnicity, isn't acceptable, but discrimination on the basis of nationality is to be encouraged.

You're confusing yourself. You asked what If had something against American workers versus Canadian workers.

I said Canadians and I'm mean Canadians and Canada as a whole, not individual groups. If you were a Canadian and lived in Canada you would understand that sentiment.

If Canada did not produce anything so as not to offend workers in other countries where would Canada get revenue to not become a beggar country........?

Lets just sell all of our properties to foreign investors and impose a tax on it untill no one can afford housing, and build social housing with the revenue.

I do live in Canada but I also live on earth. What if I said:

"I said Whites and I mean Whites as a whole, not individual groups like Canadian, American, etc. If you were White and lived among Whites you would understand that sentiment."

I guess the issue I have is with the idolization of nationality as being just as irrational as the idolization of race or anything else of the sort. I'm Canadian by an accident of birth just as I'm White by an accident of birth and male by an accident of birth.

Apologize for what? I don't need state protectionism to keep my livelihood. Open those borders and let us take on the world like Hong Kong and Singapore do.

Show me one place as far north as Svalbard that is as economically prosperous? Why aren't there any? because Svalbard is the Hong Kong of the North, a free economic zone.

You didn't say Whites. You asked what do I have against American workers.

The theme of this thread is "Trudeau said Globalization is not working for Canadians". On that I agree with him but after he made that statement he immediately did a 180 and started talking about all of the Free Trade Deals he wants Canada involved in.

I live in Canada, pay taxes in Canada's have Canada's Social Safety Net available to me.

If Americans or others want what we have they will have to elect politicians who will enable them to have that. I want Canadian workers to benefit first the rest of the world can fight it out with themselves for second place.....

So you're proposing discrimination on the basis of nationality?
