I used to experience earthquakes of various strengths many times, most of them did not exceed 5.5 on the Richter scale. But once I was in an earthquake of a magnitude of 6.5 that happened at 3:00 AM. There were about 20 earthshocks that early morning. Not very funny at all. Every single day we had multiple series of quakes of lesser strength. It took an entire month for this seismic activity to slow down and eventually stop.
Everyone was asleep when it happened. Our beds were shaking in all possible directions, the heavy crystal ceiling lamp was swinging like mad and hitting the ceiling, the artworks were dropping from the walls, doors were opening and closing, and kitchenware was jumping up and down, some ended up on the floor and broke.
My sister was visiting us that time, and she never ever experienced even a little tiny earthquake before, and that was her last night before she headed home. Just imagine - this happened in the middle of her sleep, everything was shaking, falling, opening on it's own, closing, opening again... First thing that came to her mind was... poltergeist! She seriously thought so, she actually went into full blown panic, screaming and running around. Normally we'd had to leave the house asap, but instead we were trying to catch her and calm her down. She remembers her worst nightmare ever to this very day, very clearly.
