Held back in what way? There is less racism in both Canada and the United States than at any time in our history. The KKK used to have 11 million members. Now it's down to about 7,000. There are, at best, a few hundred organized Nazis. Their numbers aren't growing.
Quite aside from the logical issues involved, such as what opinions gets banned due to who hates them (hint, yours are hated by a LOT of people) there is the evidence of what this sort of thing accomplishes.
Nothing, basically. The French have such laws, as do the British and Germans. Has it made racism go away? Nope. Has it led to peace and harmony? Nope. There are race riots in the UK and France, and groups of violent Nazis setting fire to refugee hostels in Germany. There is more racial violence and hatred between races and religions there than there is HERE.
Then they should have met without a permit.
The right exists, and it does not exist at the whim of the state.
When the state denies a permit on the grounds of "I don't like your political views" they are denying your rights.

Except that we already deny permits on the basis of promoting terrorism - for which you do not have a problem. And let's not forget that what your friend did in Charlottesville has been deemed a terrorist act, so why does he get a pass?
Unlike you, I'm logically consistent in my views so I obviously wouldn't support a rally promoting Extremist Islamic Terrorism, just as I wouldn't support a rally that promotes Nazism.
