I gave you the pertinent facts. He sold his house and was not aware that he owed CGT. That is really the only thing pertinent to my view that our laws and legal system are too complex.

Well you are in error. Properties not listed as a pricipal residence (rentals- Condos ect) are entitled to tax deducions and Cap Gains as well when sold.

If the law were simple to understand, there would be no need for lawyers. And, if simple, lawyers' training could be condensed into a paragraph on a match box cover.

... could there be a motive for the government keeping the rules semi-secret? could it be in the interests of the government to keep the laws secret so people end up breaking them? it's like speeding laws. if it's against the law to drive a vehicle in excess of 100 km/hr, why does the goverment allow the sale of cars that can go so much faster than that?

Some laws are simple and others are complicated as heck to read. I understnad they are trying to write Laws in laymans terms. That should be interesting.

Oh yes and that matchbook cover would still be huge.

While there is a need for lawyers, there is not the need suggested by special interest groups (that include lawyers), the need for which can be reduced in two ways, doing research and not putting up with any sh*t! :lol:

I think the main point here is that the law SHOULD be easily understood by everyone but most of it isn't. This is the great failing of most modern justice systems. Legalese should be against the law.:roll:

In brief:...Laws must written in such a way as to cover all possibilities in a type of infraction, and they must also be written in a way to prevent any ambiguity in interpretation.
For that...it is why you have a profession dedicated to that occupation. And the Supreme Court of Canada is the last word when there are conflicts in that interpretation.

Much as I don't like lawyers, I feel that they are a necessary evil.;-)
