I don't see why pet food is taxed anyways. It should not be.

BTW- Rev, Vanni or any other Winnipeger, do you think Steven Fletcher will hold his Charleswood/St. James seat? Wasn't it liberal for a few terms before and even NDP once or twice before? Is it a 3 way race riding?

We had this discussion awhile ago, and the Rev thinks he is nasty and stupid, and thinks he will lose his seat.

I don't know, but I thought I would mention that Christie Blatchford wrote a glowing profile of him in the Globe and Mail. (I love Blatch)

That's no endorsement; Christie Blatchford is a raving idiot.

"In a television interview Sunday, Scott Reid, Prime Minister Paul Martin's director of communications, criticized the Conservative Party's plan to give parents $1,200 per year for each child under six.

Reid said in part: "Don't give people $25 a day to blow on beer and popcorn."

Cdns. see political parties as corrupt: poll

A teaser:

OTTAWA — An international group that tracks global graft says Canadians believe political parties are the most corrupt institution in the country.

The dubious distinction was awarded to Canada by Transparency International. The Berlin-based group made the determination in its latest global corruption barometer. [/end teaser]

Some very interesting numbers.

Ed Schreyer to run for NDP in Manitoba

A teaser:

In what may be a political first in the British Commonwealth, former governor general Edward Schreyer will announce his candidacy Thursday as a New Democratic Party candidate in Winnipeg.

CTV's Rosemary Thompson broke the story Tuesday on Mike Duffy Live.

"I'm told through different people in the NDP he's really mad about this current government and that's what spurred him on to get back into politics," Thompson said.

It's not the first time Schreyer has established political firsts. The former premier of Manitoba was the youngest member of the Manitoba Legislature when he was first elected in 1958 at 22. [/end of teaser]

Hopefullt he wins, I think he will. It is a tory seat for now but has flip flopped and nothing wrong with one less conservative seat.

Ed Schreyer is a good man. I like him a lot. Can't understand why he is NDP. :)

I am not sure that it is proper for an ex-GG to run.......and I'm not sure why I'm not sure....that's for sure.

Anyway, I gotta go to bed. Good Luck Ed, I hope you loose, unless the CPC has a majority.....then I hope you win.

It's where the good people go, Colpy. Those with black hearts full of greed join the Liberals or the Conservatives.

Winnipeg-Selkirk is kind of an odd riding. It's been growing so fast that nobody really knows what the demographics are there. The Conservatives won by 8,000 votes last time but, depending who moved in, the NDP could take the riding. It would be good to see Schreyer in Ottawa.

Lord makes a list for the feds to check twice

A teaser:

New Brunswick Premier Bernard Lord announced his Christmas wish list today, asking the federal government for hundreds of millions of dollars -- and leaving some members of Parliament frowning on his expensive taste.

Lord wants Ottawa to pay for about 80 per cent -- or $160 million -- of a nearly $2 billion spending initiative planned to boost social and economic development in his province. The plan calls for a six-year timetable that would see the creation of new infrastructure and the enhancement of some of the province's recreation sites.[/url]

Happy Holidays.

Parties saving big cards for after the holiday

A teaser:

Canadian voters will likely have to wait until January to peruse the full Liberal, Conservative and New Democrat election platforms because the three parties are opting to save some surprises for the campaign's crucial second stage.

The incumbent Liberals had debated releasing their platform next week, but strategists have ultimately decided to wait, reckoning that voters are paying less and less attention to politicking as the Christmas holidays draw nearer. "I think that next week is not the time, when Canadians have clear other priorities," said one Liberal strategist who spoke on condition of anonymity. [/end of teaser]

Happy New Year I guess. Come January things should get a whole lot more interesting.

Alberta not purely Tory blue: McLellan

A teaser:

Anne McLellan, Alberta's lone Liberal MP, predicted on Monday that provincial support for her party will be much higher than Conservative Leader Stephen Harper hopes.

McLellan, who was one of two Alberta Liberals to win seats in 2004, says her party wants the province's help in shaping the national agenda.

Nicknamed Landslide Annie for her record of close election wins, McLellan says the Conservatives shouldn't underestimate Liberal support.

"About 25 per cent of Albertans vote Liberal in every federal election," she told party faithfuls at an appearance in Edmonton with northern Alberta Liberal candidates. "Add to that people who vote New Democrat who vote Green party and so on, and in fact you've got over a third of this population in every federal election voting for a party other than the Conservatives."

"Mr. Harper, we have a right to exist and those people have a right to a voice." [/teaser]

I think ole Annie will squeak in as per usual. If any other liberal were to get elected in Alberta , and I say if, it would be in Edmonton.

Martin reacts angrily to Harper's unity jab

A teaser:

An angry Paul Martin called on Stephen Harper to apologize for suggesting that the Liberal Leader wants separatists to take hold of Quebec.

On Tuesday, Harper attacked the Liberals on national unity, saying Martin wants the Parti Quebecois to gain power in the next provincial election so Liberals can "stand up for federalism" and fight to save the country.

Martin yesterday called the remark "ridiculous," but said today that he didn't fully understand its context until he watched Harper on television last night.

This morning, Martin was armed with a prepared statement when he spoke to reporters in Dartmouth, N.S. He declared that he has fought for national unity all his life, and that he has stood alongside provincial Liberals in a fight against separatists since he's been in Quebec. [/teaser]

Harper should apologize. If Harper were to get in, that would be the end of Canada as we know it.

Copps working to defeat Liberal rival

A teaser:

Former deputy prime minister Sheila Copps is helping out the Tory and NDP candidates in the Hamilton East-Stoney Creek riding in a bid to unseat her former Liberal colleague and political rival Tony Valeri.

Copps told the Hamilton Spectator that she is advising the campaign of Conservative Frank Rukavina and encouraging supporters to back the NDP's Wayne Marston in the Jan. 23 federal election.

Copps did not explicitly endorse Marston, but said she is helping out because she believes it's important for the political process.

Copps lost a nomination battle in the riding to Valeri last year. But she challenged the results, claiming there were voting irregularities. And she accused senior Liberals of trying to push her out of politics because she challenged Paul Martin for the leadership of the party. [/end of teaser]

Click link for rest of article.

Interesting she is doing that, seems to be a lot of bad blood between her and Valeri, and even Paul Martin.

Liberal says Layton has `boiled dog's head smile'

A teaser-

VANCOUVER (CP) — The Liberal election campaign has taken another hit from the blogosphere after its star B.C. candidate used a possibly insulting term to describe NDP Leader Jack Layton.

Industry Minister David Emerson is quoted in a blog written by Jamie Elmhirst, the federal Liberals' B.C. president, as referring to Layton's "boiled dog's head smile."

An NDP spokesman said the term is an English translation of a Chinese insult.

Elmhirst referred to the comment, made at a pre-election dinner, after suggesting Layton's friendly remarks about maverick New Democrat Svend Robinson during an early-December campaign stop in Vancouver were "a touch insincere."

"How did Minister Emerson describe his style at our convention dinner?" Elmhirst writes in the Dec. 5 blog entry.

"Oh yes, he said that Jack Layton had a boiled dog's head smile. That would have made even me wince if I hadn't have been laughing so hard." [/teaser]

Click above link for the rest.

He was my old boss when I was at Canfor, I hope Emerson loses his seat but somehow I do not think he will.

I think the NDP spokesman should have called the Humane Society and had them investigate Emerson for boling dog's heads.
