yup bill barilko, I'll be doing that when you come to this web forum crying how you've lost your home and loved ones when the big one hits..
Are you aware that in large quake few if any will be posting on the net?Of course you aren't that's what you posted that piece of ignorant garbage as quoted.

Unlike you I've actually lived in a country with regular earthquakes-Costa Rica.

I've been shaken out of bed many times and now don't sweat the small stuff-if I'm alive to know that a quake has occurred then everything is probably going to be alright most quakes cause little damage-like the one that just happened.

FWIW-so called Emergency Preparedness here in BC is an absolute joke-the last time they had a drill they'd lost the keys to the hut that contains the so called nerve centre and had to smash the window to get inside a true clown show.

I'm confident my low key preparations will see me through but I won't lose a second's sleep if they don't.

I've also met with people from Christchurch-again unlike you-and know that their situation was/is very very different.

I'm starting a new business ... Earthquake Grocery Ltd. You pre-order groceries online, and pre-pay of course, so that when the big big big one comes we'll deliver direct to your door within 1 hour.

Suuuuuuuurrree ya will....You already have my money, and I'll just wait on my door stoop for you to "deliver direct", meanwhile my babies starve.

You should call it Earthquake Scam Ltd.

If a real shaker ever hit our firehall would be the first building to collapse. There goes all the rescue equipment in the area. COurse it would also take us about 2 days to buck a trail through the fallen trees and power lines to find that out.

What took so long for Canada to issue a Tsunami warning?
The US issued one minutes after the quake and Canada (who was asleep at the switch) did no issue a Tsunami warning until 50 minutes later.

In Japan the first Tsunami hit after 20 minutes of the quake !!!

This is just another example of the rampant incompetence within the levels of government within BC

Wow an actual response, vs just being a jerk with a silly yawning pic for a serious topic..

Hummm, I lived in Mexico for a while and Los Angles.. yup lived through a few earthquakes and 16 years in Texas a few tornadoes and Hurricanes, so your point again..

Everyone tries to reach out via cell phone or Internet to let people know they are o.k.

I hope more people will take the possibility of a big quake in Vancouver more serious and prepare.

SOme truth in that.
But We in rural BC are smart enough to know that when there is a shaker it is time to head to higher ground. Not like the sheeple in cities that must wait for the government to tell them when to breath in and when to breath out.

Count down to the Big One....

Suppose to be within the next 50 years..

How will real estate be effected??

What do you think.. the Big One will hit this year, in the next year 2013, next 5 years, 10 years??

Maybe this was "the big one". "Big" depends a lot on location and depth, not just Richter Scale readings.

Emergency Planners Hope Island Quake Is A Wake -Up Call

VICTORIA - No one here likes to think about it. The day "the big one" shakes Vancouver Island. Even "the little one" we felt yesterday is a bit unnerving. But that may be a good thing.

"By far the most effective way of getting through to people is having something like this happen. Most of us live our lives and ignore the noise of life. These things get your attention. Some people will take action" says Rob Johns, the City of Victoria's Emergency Coordinator.

After visiting Christchurch, New Zealand in the aftermath of last year's devastating earthquake, Johns saw firsthand the time to take action, for us, is right now. "Everybody I spoke to said they wished they'd done more to be emergency prepared."

You can start by going shopping to build an emergency kit. You can find a list of recommended items online at preparevictoria.ca, which includes water, food, clothing, blankets, and a first aid kit.

You also need to be able to communicate with first responders and your loved ones. In the event of a power outage like the one affecting hundreds of thousands of people in the path of Hurricane Isaac, you won't be able to charge your cellphone. It's a good idea to get car charger.

Engineer John Sturdy has also studied the destruction in New Zealand, when Christchurch City Hall crumbled. That won't happen here once a seismic upgrade is complete next year. "City Hall is going to have to be functioning after an earthquake for the city to be able to continue to function" says Sturdy.

Sturdy says Greater Victoria is at a disadvantage when it comes to responding to a disaster like the six-point-three magnitude quake in Christchurch. The two regions are very similar, except for one major detail. "It's the same size city, it's the same age, it's got the same kind of buildings, the same kind of climate, the same kind of seismic zone, but they're one city. We are 13 municipalities in our region. They were able to operate effectively as one large city."

He says we need to figure out how we can do the same because during an earthquake, municipal boundaries don't mean much.

What are you so parnoid of earthquakes on the west coast for? You're in tornado and blizzard country now. Your odds of being in a natural disaster have skyrocketed.
