we teach cub scouts that a knife is a tool, not a weapon.
and if they call it a weapon, we take away their weapon for the rest of the year.
Aren't certain types of knives already banned in Canada? They are here, at least for carrying them. Switchblades, double-edged blades, blades over a certain length, usually 3 1/2-4 inches (8-10 cm).
It is a bit different here compared to the USA.
In Canada, any knife that can be opened through centrifugal force( a butterfly knife, or any knife with a spring removed so the blade just flips out) or any knife that can be opened with mechanical assistance( switch blade, slider blades, etc ) .....these are all prohibited in Canada.
However, unlike the USA, the definition of weapon does not include a blade length, so in Canada a machete, a 14" bowie knife and a pocket knife are equal until intent is established. Not one of them is considered a weapon unless intent is established. If you are a boy scout or a bushcrafter or a carpet layer in Canada, GO Crazy! You have a valid reason for a knife, and intent would be difficult to establish. If you are street youth gang banger, even a pocket knife in your wallet could make you guilty of concealed weapons charges.

interestingly enough, this knife can be opened by centrifugal force, yet it is not illegal because you need to hold the knife by the blade instead of the handle. Subtle difference, but that is the way it is in Canada.
