Is our airports at risk?

Over the years, there has been a number of terrorist attacks on airports with the most recent ones in Turkey and Belgium.

After a major terrorist attack elsewhere, you will see heavy RCMP/police presence at our airports, complete with automatic heavy firearms. Once the dust has settled, the RCMP or local police will be gone. Without the heavy RCMP presence, how secure is our airports? The unarmed security guards at the airport likely won't be effective, can our airport withstand an attack like the one in Turkey or Belgium?

They'll attack anywhere they damn well please by the looks of things, Boomer. They are managing, in spite of numerous police and security forces from many countries hunting them, to bomb airport after airport. They will continue to do so until every last one is hunted down and killed or jailed. And that is proving to be no easy task.

I was working @ YVR today picking someone up for a local festival and walked in to meet the other volunteer doing the actual greeting-I'd met him earlier in the week and noticed he wasn't the sharpest corn chip in the bag.

Anyway after an RCMP officer walked by with a b*mb sniffing dog the other volunteer started mouthing off about b*mbs & g*ns like he had never been in an airport in his life-I slowly backed away/made my excuses and lit out for the toilet then the parking lot.

My point is that some people just don't get it until things go bad-if you want security act like a straight honest person and don't make inappropriate jokes-ever.

They f*cking bombed Spain several years ago. Who the hell bombs Spain? Or Belgium? Christ, even Sweden is getting hammered by the filthy bastards. In 2014 there were 25 bombings or explosives attacks in Malmo alone. From Jan 2015 to mid July 2015, there were already 18.
Seriously, what the hell did Sweden do that could have possibly pissed off a bunch of inbred moon cultists?

You need a series of attacks and then you can declare Martial Law and the Police get all the help they would ever need. Thanks to the old PM's we even have access to US troops being authorized to 'do policing duties'. If you want an idea of what that looks like in Canada you have to go back a few decades. If you want to see it under American control you need to look at Gaza during the 1967-1987 period.

Screening, detection and deterrence...

So this week, at Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport, another three suicidal individuals arrived with the intent to massacre innocent travellers. Were they to be thwarted by the presence of a checkpoint outside the terminal?

No, because if one is heavily armed and wearing a suicide vest, the illusion of security generated by the presence of security technologies to analyse the bodies and bags of compliant individuals can easily be punctured.

The marauding firearms terrorist can simply force their way into the building, killing anybody who stands in their way.

That said, I would be the first to admit that, if an armed terrorist makes it as far as the terminal door, the behavioural detection officer has limited opportunity to intervene. Indeed, the process of challenging the suspect could even put him or her first on the casualty list.

We need to be performing such screening processes whilst people are on the move or some distance from their intended target, ideally allowing enough time to sound the alarm when concern arises.

Behavioural detection is only part of the solution. The deployment of canine units to identify the presence of explosives on people as they approach terminals and visibly armed units at the ready to engage offer a far greater deterrent than any traditional checkpoint.

We can never guarantee security at airports. As is often said the only airport which is 100 per cent secure is one which is 100 per cent closed. But we can – indeed must – start to put ourselves in the shoes of the terrorist and develop strategies which mitigate our vulnerabilities.
