Is it necessary for cops to use lethal force against a guy with a knife?

Part of what's changed is that they seem to have switched gears from 'keeping the peace', to 'ruling the inmates'. It's no longer a protector mentality, it's a 'boss' mentality.
Excellent analysis.
That is the issue that needs to be addressed. Quickly and efficiently.

Really, is that a surprise in a legal system that has gone from pursuit of justice to pursuit of conviction?

Perhaps a little more so, but even back during the trial of David Milgaard, pursuit of conviction was very much in evidence then.

I think the transformation was well underway in the time of Stephen Truscott. The more TV makes forensics look like science, the more enforcement makes it look like Planet of the Apes

I'm sure there were other things the police could have done before they shot this dude, but on the other hand no one should have a right to threathen others with a knife in this day and age.

So I'm all in favour that if you threathen anyone with a knife and you don't drop it when asked, your history right now!!
I think if the police shoot a few more of these dudes threathing others with knives, these dudes will soon get the message!!
Fk em, we don't need this kind of behavior in our society today!!

In this world or the next??

This has to do with a knife being a dangerous weapon... How hard is this to understand?

I know what a knife is capable of. I use one every single day. But it's only a danger in the proximity of other people. That's why I asked if he was holding people hostage. Or if he was alone on the bus.

You can ask Tim McLean's family how dangerous they are, I'm sure that they would have preferred if Vince Li had only cut up a seat or two.

Still have any questions on this?

You seem to be missing a subtle difference in the two cases, one bus was loaded with passengers and a driver and was in motion, the other was unoccupied except for the knife wielder and was stationary.

Was this bus just sitting there empty when buddy decided to get on board?

Oooooooooh I am remiss- They should have shot him then!

Just remiss?.... Don't sell yourself short, you are much 'more' than that.

But back to the question:

How about it? Were just the seats at risk when the bus had passengers and this fruit-loop was on it? I am hoping that your vast experience as an arm-chair police Chief will shed some light on this

It's my vast experience at common sense that is much more likely to shed light on it. -:) Whenever two or more people assemble anywhere, there is an element of risk, but you just can't go blowing a guys brains out because statistically there is a tiny chance he could be a risk. What would you have done had you been on the bus when this guy climbed on?

It might not have been. And had there been people on it when they chose to shoot him dead, they'd have been totally justified. But shooting someone dead once the danger has passed doesn't fly.

I'm not sure that he can grasp that! -:)

As long as they so chose AFTER he became a menace! -:)

Wow. I thought people were joking when they said the guy was tasered after being shot. Now that is definitely overkill. Corpses dont attack.
