U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that a ceasefire with Iran was "on life support" after Tehran's response to a U.S. proposal to end the war made clear the two sides were still far apart on a number of issues.

Asked where the ceasefire stands, Trump told reporters on Monday:

"I would call it the weakest right now, after reading that piece of garbage they sent us. I didn't even finish reading it," he said.

In its response, Tehran also demanded compensation for war damage, emphasized its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, and called on the U.S. to end its naval blockade, guarantee no further attacks, lift sanctions and remove a ban on Iranian oil sales.

They may or may not have mentioned Lebanon (Hezbollah) but who knows. Apparently Trump didn’t finish reading that? Smotrich called for Israel to annex "strategic areas" in the West Bank as a response.

The EU has previously imposed two rounds of sanctions on nine Israelis and five extremist organizations, including the Jewish supremacist group Lehava and Tzav 9, which blocks humanitarian aid to Gaza.

The third sanctions package "has been ready since autumn 2024 and single-handedly blocked by Hungary for a year and a half" under the Orbán government, Martin Konecny, director of the Brussels-based European Middle East Project, told Haaretz.
