Indigenous activists, including Chase Iron Eyes, the Lakota lawyer of the Standing Rock Sioux who is running as a Democrat for North Dakota’s single congressional seat, have for the past two years organized Native Lives Matter to bring attention to this situation and hold police and prosecutors accountable.

Special Investigation: Native Americans Are Being Killed by Police at a Higher Rate Than Any Other Group

Here is an interview conducted by Amy Goodman of Democracy Now with Stephanie Woodard and James Rideout, a member of the Puyallup tribe and the uncle of Jacqueline Salyers, a 32-year-old pregnant mother and member of the Puyallup Tribe who was killed by police earlier this year in Tacoma, Washington.

Go to Court in Regina someday. Rooms 1 or 2 at 9:30 and 1:30 to see what the cops and justice system have to deal with.

Absolutely. At the same time, though, any time a person is shot dead, a full inquiry and accountability is necessary.

Why should cops have a different (easier) standard?

Up here they don't, they are liable for their actions.

The cop doing time for unloading on the guy with a knife on a TTC trolley as example.

The cops charged doing Starlight Tours as another.

What does a Saskatoon cop say to a Native?

"FREEZE"!

Well, that's a good thing. But I heard the Mounties that beat the crap outta the bike-riding guy got a short suspension and no criminal charges.

Just sayin'. You and me came to a pretty good accord on Indians, and if you say the cops are held properly accountable out your way, I believe it.

Whites get the same treatment. A clean cut white kid who does something stupid will get clubbed all the same. They don't take bullsh-t from anyone.

We finally get around to mentioning the most persecuted people in the Americas. In the early movie days they has white actors play Africans, today blacks are used to stand in on roles that Indians should be fulfilling but there are only a handful of Indian actors even today.
I'm not sure wikileaks was even authorized to mention the Indians.

I actually believe you. Best cop I ever met was Const. Terry Lyall, RCMP. Ex-Special Infantry. I commented on his extreme (to me) politeness, and he said "It's easy to go from Constable Friendly to Constable Nasty. Hard to go from Constable Nasty to Constable Friendly. So I start out friendly. After that, it's up to you."

Good kid. Hell of a man. I don't ever wanna see his Constable Nasty.

They should actually have a higher standard, IMO.

I certainly agree with one premise of the article - that Native deaths at the hands of law enforcement do appear to be under-reported by media in relation to the deaths of other Americans.

it's a slow death
some find that delicious
but predators eat what's there
others will get their turn soon enough

I've been that stupid white kid and took my knocks.
I've taken a few. Some I deserved, some I didn't. There was still a lot of anti-Indian racism in Oklahoma in the 60s and 70s. And local (town and county) cops are the worst. Poorly trained and not too bright. Little sense of professional pride.

C'est la vie. Now I'm rich and they're probably dead or Oxy addicts. Guess that means I win. Maybe I'll go do a dance or something.

Agree with everything you say, completely. And Indian everything is under-reported by the media. The media is centered in the major cities. Why haul *** 1500 miles over bad roads when there's plenty of human misery three blocks away?

Just be you and maybe join Big Brothers or something.
Most of my mentoring is with law students. Got a meeting with a few on Sunday. That's the deal I made a long time ago. My money goes to the rez, my time and attention goes to the law.

Not ideal, and sometimes I regret it. But it seems to me it worked out OK. And it's nice to get home every now and then.

Depends where you are. The Native misery is just as urban as it is on the Rez.

As mentioned before in private, I've really left Moccasin Flats.

Probably more up there than down hereabouts. Relatively few cities with high concentrations of natives. Mostly Oklahoma City and Seattle.

Oddly, a whole damn bunch in LA, but LA's so big and spread out you don't notice 'em amongst the blacks and Latinos.

You'll note I'm being all cordial and not ranting about white guilt making the press ignore us, enit?
