It is written at the Statue of Liberty Give us your "tired," the "poor" and the "huddled masses yearning to breath free." No one who follows proccedue is refusued for reasons of being sick as well.
Now could that be one of the reasons our health care is so high, we have a lot of people to take care of.
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
This is what Lazarus said. This is what we all believed. This is what made all American citizens feel great about our country.
Briefly, here is what I think should be in the bill:
- An amnesty period of about 2 years for illegal immigrants and for employers of illegal immigrants
- After the 2 year period, no guest workers
- After the 2 year period, knowingly employing illegal aliens brings jail time
- After the 2 year period, all illegal aliens are eligible to become citizens, provided they pass an English class and an American History class
- Border patrols are beefed up
These are my ideas. They are not written in stone. However, whatever we do, let's not be mean. Let's act in the spirit of Emma Lazarus. Let's welcome to our shores the "tired," the "poor" and the "huddled masses yearning to be free."
It was mentioned earlier that bigotry grows within special clubs, I hope no country falls into that catagory.
